How to get to Carbondale
How do I get to Carbondale, ILL from Washington DC. I prefer to travel by plane as much as possible. What is the closest commercial airport to Carbondale? I plan to take any of the major national carriers: Southwest, American, Continental etc.
Comments welcome.

Yes, I flew into St. Louis and if I remember correctly, it was a fairly short and easy drive in a rental car to get to Carbondale.

BWI used to have a lot of service to STL, but I'm not sure now that TWA is kaput.
1) St. Louis
2) Nashville
3) Memphis
4) Evansville, IN (commuter service from Chicago or Memphis)
If I may make one aside, flying into this general area, especially St. Louis in the Spring/early Summer runs a slight risk of stormy weather. If I had to pick I'd try not to fly in the afternoon hours, around 4 as it seems (anecdotally) that storms are slightly stronger around this time and your chance of a delay increases.

Before deciding on a car rental from St. Louis to Carbondale, you might at least check a flight from St. Louis to Williamson County Airport. That is just outside of Marion, Illinois and about 14 miles east of Carbondale on Rt. 13.
Factor in car rental, gas, time, might make it worthwhile. Don't remember what the regional airline is that is there now but they have had some cheap promotional prices in the past.

Unfortunately this would add at least $150 to his travel costs.

If you cannot get a direct DC-St. Louis flight, you might want to factor in the cost of a rental car vx the cost of a ticket to St. Louis. I do believe a freind got a direct NY to St.Louis. I think from St Louis the route is East on I-64 to South on IL 51. My map is old. Probably next to afternoon storms the other thing you might need to know is 61/40 through St. louis is closed for bridge repairs or ??? It looks like it may be this way for a while yet. .
