Not to be accused of stating the obvious, but the only "big city" in Illinois IS Chicago.

You'll like Gibson City, it's fairly convenient to get to Champaign-Urbana or Bloomington-Normal from there (both are about forty miles off). Plus they;ve got all kinds of nifty things there. My favorite is the drive in theatre- here's a link to it: http://www.harvestmoondrivein.com .

I, of course, recommend Saint Joseph. Excellent school system, nice parks, quiet town, friendly people, and very close to Champaign-Urbana and Danville.
