Demographically, eight Illinois Counties are counted in the St. Louis Metropolitan Stastical Area (MSA) - which also includes nine Missouri Counties. Geographically these same Illinois counties have a combined population of 686,268 with Madison and St. Claire Counties having the largest populations at more than 250,000 each. Some or all of the Illinois eight counties are considered to be in the Illinois, East Metro area.

Statistically Peoria, B-N and Champaign metro areas, with nine counties, have a combined population of just under 3/4 million at 743,106, of which Peoria has the greater MSA at just under 370,000

The original question was why doesn't Illinois have a second city in the forum? Then someone questioned why St. Louis isn't listed as the second city in Illnois?

The answer lies in the Administrator and Moderators. The official position is St. Louis will remain in Missouri. There is not enough activity outside of Chicago and the Chicago suburbs to warrant a third thread. Officially and othersiwes, the second city is the Chicago Suburbs. Whether or not the official position is a popular one is moot. The final decision on forum topics and threads belongs to the Adminstrator.

Go back and read the original post. That's not the "original question." Its why doesn't Illinois have a second city, period. Nothing to do with City-Data.

Jons99: Please explain [1] what portion of IL eight counties are located in St. Louis, Mo., [2] what percentage of those county taxes are paid to Mo., [3] and why?

[There is only one town in Illinois, physcially divided by a river, where residents pay taxes in two Illinois counties. It is not far from 1-80.]

Nobody ever said an Illinois county was located in Missouri, so there was nothing to concede.

However, you did say that no llinois counties are part of the St. Louis metro area, which is 100% incorrect..Of course you also tried to claim that St. Louis is the smallest city in the midwest... LOL

You changed the subject. Explain the difference between a metro area and the OMB stats (for the same area).

I did err ever so slightly. Highway 370 has not yet been designated as an Intrstate route.

Default Illinois second city

When stating that Illinois doesn't have a second city, you also have to consider the sheer magnitude of Chicago. It's the 3rd largest city in the nation, 3 million in the city itself and close to 8 million in the surrounding metro area. Some of the other states mentioned have populations spread more evenly across cities, in the Ohio example, Colombus, Cincinnati & Cleveland each have populations of 1 Million or less. Illinois as a single major city state is similar to New York, where the major city is magnitudes of order larger and eclipses any other city in the state. So large that the population of the rest of the state is far less than the major city's metro area.

Indeed. Assuming the stats are corect, if Illinois has a population of 12M nearly 8M live in Chicago or Chicago suburbs. It is an excellent explanation as to why the Chicago suburbs (as a whole) are considered a second city on this forum. It does not negate the importance of any other population center in the state.

Ture linicx, while some in this forum consider the Chicago Suburbs Illinois second city, I really don't think that measures up. Although there are definite difference between the two, the City of Chicago and the suburbs really function as a single entity. Plus, had the city of Chicago not grown to its massive size, most of the suburbs would have remained small farming/industrial towns. This is not so for the other cities in Illinois.
