Default Moving costs.

I am moving from California to Illinois in July. I am trying to find the best cost to get all my stuff there. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, but will not be bringing most of my furniture...just a full size bed, a cardtable, and then general other things like clothes and personal items. I want to know other peoples' opinions on whether I should rent a truck and drive it there, or if I should ship my things and fly. I have looked up prices for renting a truck ($1000-2000), but I am not even sure where to start on the shipping. What kinds of shipping companies are out there, and would it be more or less expensive than the truck?

By the way, no, I am not planning on bringing my car...I am hoping to use public transportation when I get there.

Moving over 90 miles is a killer. You are charged by weight. I moved only 90 miles and it cost me $8,000. (3 bedroom home)
Rent a truck one way and do it yourself. Just bring what you need...or hold sacred. Otherwise not worth it.
I learned the hard way.

So, since I am just moving a bed and a fold-up table, what is everyone's opinion on what I should do? Obviously it will not cost me $8000, but I still am having a hard time getting a price range on shipping.

Hey Mel,
I'm in the same situation. -Moving from L A to Chicago this summer. I started by searching for moving companies on the Better Business Bureau website (bbb.org). I looked for well rated companies that have been in business a long time. One of those companies quoted me as follows: 1000 lb minimum at $700 per 1000 lbs. That included them loading and unloading and driving to Chicago. It included gas. So, we'll probably have 2500-3000 lbs of stuff to move, which will cost $1750-2100.
