Default Climbing rose

I have a beautiful orange climbing rose that has been planted for about four years. Last year it got tall and out of control, I cut it back within an inch of its life. About a foot tall. I was afraid I had murdered it, but the short stem coming out of the ground does have new leaves showing, but I,m afraid it won,t come back as it was. Will it survive my exerburant cutting and be as big and beautiful as it was and what can I do to help it along?

IF it survived the winter, and IF it is not wild, nurture it with a little rose food once a month. Be cautious with plant food. Too much, too often can burn the roots and kill the plant. Do remember your plant was 4 years old when you severely trimmed it back. Therefore it won't grow tall and out of control overnight. If you trim a little bit every fall, it should not get out of control again.

Yes, it will come back. Just feed it beginning in the spring like the person above suggested. Buy some rose-tone brand. that works good. Just do not feed late into the fall. Stop in mid/late august. Any new growth is too tender to make it through the winter and will just die off in our harsh winters. Actually you pruned it, but in this past harsh winter, you would have likely lost the canes to the weather anyway. So don't blame yourself too much.

I've had a lot of roses from Jackson & Perkins but never a climber. How do you protect it in the winter?. We covered ours.
