Carol, there is shopping outside of the downtown area. If you need more, DuBuque Iowa is nearby, and I always loved my trips to Madison WI. I think you will like NW Illinois a lot! You can't beat it for scenic beauty. And good people too.

No actually. My brother-in-law was in the 101st Airborne at Ft. Campbell in TN/KY. You?

Nice pix, Steve-o. Thanks for sharing. Galena's a wonderful place, glad to see it hasn't changed much.

Thanks, Artemis. I really love the area, too. DH and I went there last summer for a weekend. We stayed in Dubuque so we could take a look there, too. I've started shopping online for real estate. Both times I've been there, the place has been swarming with tourists. Can you tell me what it's like to live in Galena? Specifically, is it difficult getting around, doing errands, going shopping, etc., because of the tourists?

Carol, I lived in Freeport, IL, to the East of Galena.
Anytime I visited the downtown area of Galena, it was bustling. While the downtown area was crowed it wasn't hard to get around. I used to go to Galena in October for the Art in the Park show which was lots of fun.
Steve-O, I moved to Nashville for work. Wound up getting married, so I'm going to be here for a while. :-)
For anyone thinking about moving to NW Illinois, its a great place to raise kids. The schools are good and the people are down-to-earth.

Hi Carol!
I to am wondering those same questions. My husband and I are not looking to retire, but reside in Galena and work in Dubuque. It looks so beautiful I can't help but keep going back to it. Galena's chamber of commerce sent a whole relocation package out to me. It was very helpful. Let me know if you find the answers to those questions...I'll do the same!

Hi Susan-You may want to visit Mt. Carroll when you're back in the area. Not quite as expensive as Galena, but it has the quaintness Galena had before it became a tourist trap. And the people are the friendliest you'll ever find. Mt. Carroll is about 40 minutes southeast of Galena in Carroll County, the county seat, and we're only 10 miles from the Mississippi. Doug

I'm also one of those trying to decide where to live in a few years, as in getting out of Lake County, Illinois. Galena certainly has grown though, I remember years ago (many) driving US 20 when there was a sign saying congratulations, you survived US20! It was all 2 lane then and scarey.
Four years ago I took early retirement at 55, stayed home, visited family (in Iowa and Michigan) then realized more money would be a good thing so I am working for Manpower at Abbott's.
In a few years when I am closer to 62, I would love to be in a small town somewhere and I have not ruled out Galena! Looked at Freeport, Sterling, Rock Falls and Dixon and decided I didn't want to be there. Checked out Byron last weekend and liked it but not much for sale there really, lots of stuff on the edge of town, new, condos etc. I didn't like Oregon as well as Byron.
I have time to look yet and need to get out to Galena again, too!

Mt. Carroll is nothing like Galena, not even close (other than theyre kinda close geographically). Its not a bad town, dont get me wrong, but if someone is looking into an area like Galena with all its shopping/dining/scenery/etc, theyre probably not going to be happy w/ Mt. Carroll. That would be like me recommending Winfield to someone who wants Naperville. Both are nice towns, but theyre apples and oranges.
