How people pronounce the state depends in large part on where they live. In deep Southen Illionis, it is sometimes pronounced "Ellinoiz", in the Central part of the state it is usually pronounced "Ellinoy", and in the north, it it usually pronounced "Illinoy". In Chicago, they don't call it anything. To them, there is either "the city", "the suburbs", or "Downstate" (a/k/a: appendage of the old South).
