We should correct the state spelling to Ilinoy
After all, everyone in the state pronounces it that way—Illinoy not Illinois with the “s” at the end (or Illinoiz). And while we are at it, let’s drop that extra L to shorten things up a bit. New name: Ilinoy
If it was spelled like it sounded—Ilinoy—then fewer people would mispronounce it, right?

Good idea. Let us dumb down the population more. I am sure much of the brain dead mass that already mispronounce the word would still mispronounce the word even with a different spelling.

Illinois
Ilinoy - funny, that's a good one.
I always found it strange that everyone seems to know not to pronounce the final 's' in Arkansas (although I have heard a few say Ar-Kansas ), I'd say a little more than a third of the people I've met out of state pronounce the ending 's' in Illinois.

I met a couple from France in the loop about two years ago. I stumbled through my only phrase in the language: ""Illinois" c'est un nom francais!"

If you spelled it "Ilinoy", it would be pronounced "eye-lin-oy", which would also be incorrect. How about we just stick with Illinois, its nice sounding and a visually attractive word as well, especially when written in cursive.

Agreed! (And a cheer went out through the masses.)
