Here in St. Louis' Illinois suburbs it seems that Cards fans stretch up to about Springfield without many Cubs enclaves. South, Cards fans can be found down to the Gulf and west all the way into Colorado. My daughter's in Champaign/Urbana and can't find a Cards fan anywhere.

A lot of this has to do with KMOX Radio (1120 AM) which had a clear channel and broadcast the Cardinals games with 50,000 watts back in the day when they were the westernmost team in the U.S. Hall of Fame broadcasters including Harry Carey (before Chicago) and Jack Buck didn't hurt either.

I think the Cards' winning history attracts fans outside of the immediate metro area too. I think the Cards/Cubs rivalry is fun and not nearly as negative as the old Cards/Mets hatred in the 80s.

If you are from Chicago you think southern Illinois is anything south of I-80. Having lived in the actual southern Illinois (Murphysboro), I think it starts south of I-64. That being said, most are Cardinal's fans. Who are the Bulls? And a lot of bears fans since the football cardinals were never ever real good anyway.
I also lived in Bloomington and half the folks were Cards fans, half Cubs fans and the rest were idiots.
Also, lots of Bears fans but the occasional Packer fan

Don't forget the Colts. Some Eastern Illinois area fans follow the Colts rather than the Bears.

In the metro-east (which is a part of the STL media market), it is overwhelmingly Cards, Blues, and Rams. NBA loyalties are all over the board - but lots of Bulls, Lakers, and now Cavs fans. Springfield and north seems to be more Chicago fans. I don't know about far southern Illinois (once you get out of the STL TV/radio listening area).

Areas like Cairo I would assume is Cardinal country. Cape Girardeau is Cardinal country.

Chicago only wants fans who live in the Chicago area. We do not; therefore we are Card fans.

I am an Illinois Packerbacker. Rooting for the Pack since I was a little kid. Go Pack Go. Being a football town, being a Packers fan is much worse than being a Cardinals fan in Chicagoland.

I would consider south of I-70 to be southern Illinois.

Were you born in WI? I can't see how anyone born in Chicagoland would be a fudge packer fan...There is so much love for the bears here and so much hate for the pack.

I went to school at SIU....had 3 roommates, me and one more were cubs fans and the other 2 were cards fans..It was fun..

When it comes to football though, there were alot more bears fans than rams fans.
