Need advice as to where to live near SIU.
I plan on attending the Law school at Southern Illinois at carbondale. Where should I live? Is ST Louis to far to live or should I move to Carbondale? I want to be able to get to school within a good time and have a night life.

Carbondale
Carbondale is a really nice college town, there are a lot of little towns that are near, Southern Il is a wonderful place to live if you don't want the heartache of the CITY, Sesser is a quaint town but about 35 minutes away. check out www.sesser.org

Yes, St. Louis is too far to live to attend SIU-C. Plenty of small towns nearby if you don't want to live in C'dale - Murphysboro is only 13 miles west. If you want night life, live in Carbondale but not in student housing.

There is an absolute overabundance of housing in the Carbondale area. The enrollment at SIU has gone from 25,000 in the early 90's to 19 - 20,000 now.
Hundreds of new apartments in complexes were built just a few years ago much to the dismay and screaming of local landlords, owners, and property managers. Many of the new ones are still empty and privately owned ones are struggling to fill theirs and many have been empty year round.
What that did do was force many local rentals to clean up their properties. You can easily find a place a block from campus or as many miles away as you want. Prices are substantially less than many university towns also. You can find a 2-3 bedroom apartment/duplex/house, 600 - 900 sq. ft., less than 8 miles in any direction of Carbondale for $400 - $500. They are there believe me. If you shop a bit you can find very neat and clean ones though there are still plenty of iffy ones. There are many rentals off on little side roads south of town. It's a renters market there.
Keep an eye on the local newspaper, the Southern Illinois .......... thesouthern.com
Also the student/university paper. The Daily Egyptian ........... siude.com
Might also look at Craigslist as they have a Carbondale category.

Carbondale is not a city, so whoever suggested that...wow. Carbondale has a pop. of 20k, probably 35k when school is in session.
And St Louis is 2 1/2 hours from CDale.
