I had a copperhead outside my door ready to strike and a snapping turtle in the house. That was enough for me.

Cowboy Action Shooting and Single Action Shooting Society....

My Dad and I both practiced and competed in quickdraw and other pistol competitions and long range rifle events for many years and in several different states.

He started me out as a child and it was something we enjoyed and had in common. We shot constantly for several years and had almost weekly impromtu get togethers where we would shoot for money against friends and family, but I lost him 10 yrs ago and pretty much stopped fooling with it...I was totally burned out on it anyway and now every once in a great while,I'll show off for my kid to teach her something about shooting or a friend(tho I'm not 1/1000 as slick as I was ten years ago now),but otherwise I really have no interest in it anymore at all and every gun I own now is DA instead of SA.....A waste really,if you consider how many thousands of dollars we shot up to get our skills up and then for me to just lose total interest and quit.

Besides being a farmer, my dad owned a gun shop.....so, I grew up around guns. I especially miss the Holidays when I was young when Gramps, my dad, my dad, my brother and I would go out to the farm and hunt. We always brought back a rabbit or two, a couple of pheasants, and usually a duck. Gramma always insisted we have duck at Christmas and Thanksgiving....YUK! Thank goodness she also cooked chicken.

We used to skeet shoot a lot and I sure miss it. My son-in-law's folks own a place along a river so occasionaly we go out there to shoot clay over the river.....oh the wonderful warm feeling of the gun ... it's that kick my gun has that gets me....getting older doesn't agree with kick from the gun. HA HA

The boys in my high school class were jealous....some of them never got a chance to practice shoot or even know how to handle a gun. Sometimes I would beg my dad to invite one of those boys along when we went out skeet shooting so the boy could learn about guns. I only invited the cute ones though!!

I miss those days myself....my Dad bought and sold guns as a side business for years and all of my extended family shot, but it seems as if it has fallen by the wayside now and nobody fools with it as much around here.

I can remember holidays myself where we would meet at Granny's place and there could be as many as a hundred guns being traded, shot and checked out at any given time.

The chickenshyt laws in this state have pretty well shut that down to nill...Just because Chicagoland doesn't know how to handle their gun issues,we in the rest of the state suffer for it.

Mule....you are so funny!

I love my gun....and you can bet your bippy I will keep it too! We can still practice shoot around here....we've even gone to the city police and the sheriff's range (he's our best friend and neighbor). Downstate it's pretty common to know the law enforcement....I bet upper parts of the state don't know theirs!!

My g-kids put a small snapping turtle in my pond in the back yard just the other day!!

I KNEW there were a bunch of lakes and campgrounds I was missing, but I can not believe I missed this one as it should have been near the top of my list

We ride to this one a lot too because it is so close AND nice.

Lake Glendale....THIS is a very nice campground...very clean, nice restrooms and a bunch of nice camping spots with electric...there's a beach and a fantastic picnic area. You will NOT be disappointed if you make this campground a stop.

Mule,

I have to tell you this story. I went to HS with a red-headed kid that tormented me unmercifully and of course you knew we had to be good friends. He grew up to be LEO on the local force. We ate breakfast with the coroner while viewing the latest crime scene pictures. I gotta tell ya Hollywood us a lot neater and cleaner. I didn't know a blood spatter could make such a mess.

One day he told me of when he first strapped on his iron and started to practice quick draw. He did it in the bedroom I suppose to admire his stance in a mirror. He always had an empty cylinder but one day he forgot to check the chamber. That was the day he shot the wall.

Needless to say it was an great lesson in firearm safely, and he even went on to teach some classes, but more than that it put the fear in him that lasts to this day. You see the live round that went through the wall, also went through the wall of his parents bedroom and lodged in the footboard of their bed. A few inches higher and the slug would have hit one of his sleeping parents.

It was a small house with the bedrooms side by side as they were built fifty years ago. I asked him what his mother said. 'Go clean up your mess" - which translated to repairing to walls and painting both bedrooms. He was so good at it, he was volunteered to paint the living room and kitchen.
