info please...
I'm trying to find some info about St. Charles, West Chicago, Geneva, and Batavia. We are looking to move to an area with access to the city but would like to have a nice yard (up to an acre) and have noticed that these areas do have the types of homes and properties that we are looking for. We are looking for a good place to raise a family. Are these good areas to do that? How are the schools and neighborhoods? Is there a lot of crime? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Might look around Sandwich and Princeton, too.

West Chicago has some areas that are definitely 'challenged', and Batavia has a handful of trouble spots too. If you do your home work you can find some terrific spots in any of those towns.
While none of these towns have high schools that ranked in the upper tier in the most recent US News analysis, many people are satisfied with the schools and there are also excellent choices in private schools in the area.
Even the worst spot in West Chicago would be considered very low crime by most standards.
Recently "Money" magazine rated Batavia highly based on the employment base and mostly stable home values.
In broad terms there is probably more demand for homes in Geneva, followed closely by St. Charles, then Batavia with West Chicago trailing. Prices mostly reflect this ranking too -- money will not buy as much house in the most desirable area, especially if an acre of land is high on your list of wants...

Thank you all for the quick replies. Yes, we would like to be within an hour or so from the city and maybe asking for an acre would be asking too much but we just would like more than a 'patio' so anyting between 1/4 and an acre would be perfect, with easy access to parks and trails. We like the smaller town feel as we will be coming from Alaska but understand that these suburbs may be bigger than we expected. We've found homes that appear to have what we want but it's difficult to tell if they're in the 'bad part's' or not or even if there are any bad parts is hard to tell from a distance. We have family in Chicago that are a big help but word of mouth and advice are also extremely helpful in getting a better picture of the communities. Thanks again!

I think West Chicago has pretty much been eliminated and we are leaning towards Geneva. Smaller home but nicer yard and that's what we're looking for. It seems like a nice quaint town with history and community. Am I correct about that?

What about Wheaton? Is it a nice community?
