Texting and Driving in Illinois
I watched a demonstration on CNN the other night concerning avoidable things that distract a driver. The car was driven at 25 mph on a closed track. It was pre-determined it takes 6 seconds for the average driver to text and send a message while driving. The distance traveled was the length of a football field plus both end zones. I shudder to think just far that same car could have traveled at 65 mph?

I shudder anytime I see someone driving and texting. Some people who are on the cell phone, weave all over the road. Not long ago I saw where Connecticut passed a law where cell phones are banned while driving...at that time I think it said 4 other states have laws....New York, New Jersey, California, and Washington. I thought I also read where some states were considering banning a drink, eating and letting your dog sit in your seat.
I have seen women putting on makeup, painting their nails and putting on lipstick while driving. Shudder!!

I would be happy if it was a $10,000.00 fine for the first offense of texting and driving.

I agree. We all have to wear seat belts. This texting thing is 10X more dangerous.

IMO texting and talking on a cell phone should be a major crime with a heavy fine and/or jail time. That is the only way cops will bother to stop people or the judicial system can deal with this dangerous habit that so many people have acquired with this new technology.
Cell phones in cars that are used by the driver are no different than a drunk driver or using a loaded gun as far as danger to themselves or the surrounding drivers. It will take these harsh measures to change the habits of drivers today.

Texting while driving is now illegal in Cleveland Ohio. I think it is a waste of time. How can you actually enforce a law like that.

MANY ways to enforce it...the fine that should be the highest is if you have a wreck and they check your phone records and find out you were texting when the accident occured...IMHO there should be prison time for that.

Texting/talking on the phone while driving are my biggest pet peeves. People caught doing this should lose their license and or have to pay a huge fine and have a few hundred hours of community service.
