Champaign is actually in Eastern Central Illinois. Look at Champaign-Urbana on a state map. Then you can see which side is N and S. Urbana is East and slightly South of Champaign. Therefore, S. Urbana is East of Champaign.

Many of the Midwestern states do have tornadoes in the summer. Tornadoes spawn in fields and move SW to NE. There is no amount of money that will convince me to live in the SW corner of any town in Illinois - especially when it is surrounded by corn and bean fields. I would be looking for a hoiuse at least 5 miles East of I-57 and at least 5 miles south of I-74 that is not near a lake.

Most Twisters are not 5 miles wide, and they usually follow a path of least resistance. near an Interstate as there is not much to impede movement. I-72 and I-55 are SW-NE routes. . I-74 os an E-W route.

I would not live in a house that did NOT have a basement with a NW corner I could use. The good news is IL tornadoes are not normally as violent as the one that hit OKC, OK.. It was on the ground hours and left a path of destruction for 40 miles. Buy a AC/DC Noaa radio and keep batteries in your freezer. IF you ever need it, you'll have fresh batteries.

No doubt someone reading this will want to argue weather. Here are historical facts. Springfield and Bloomington are situated on I-55. In 50 years Sangamon county/Springfield had 70 twister. The worst hit Springfield twice in one day. McLean county/Bloomington had 98 in the same period. Peoria county/Peoria situated on West I-74 had 21 in the same 50 years. period.

The location and direction of major highways make a big difference if you live near one. Open fields and easy to access fo water make a difference and so do heavily forested areas.

I live in SW Champaign (Mattis and Windsor). It is a relatively safe place to raise your kids and own a home. If you are asking if the SW part of Champaign is safe overall, then I would say yes, amongst other neighborhoods in town.

I am not familiar enough with East Illinois Street to offer advice, but I imagine that other forumites can help you better than I can. In addition, I recommend searching the forum for some help regarding CU services for kids, school systems, etc. I've searched before and they were very helpful! What is important for you when moving into a new town?

The street that divides Champaign from Urbana is Wright Street; most of it is located on campus. If you would like to see the boundaries of the towns, I recommend visiting Champaign's website and looking up their maps--they are good references and give well-drawn details about the town.

What did you mean when you said that southern Urbana is eastern Champaign?
I'm not sure I understand the question, but I hope this can clarify: Windsor Road is an east-west street that runs from SW Champaign to SE Urbana. It is for the most part the southern border for both towns. So southern Urbana is just southern Urbana; to its west is southern Champaign. The only thing separating both towns on their southern borders is the university--all that farmland is the school's.

Default I think my question was

is Western Urbana is Eastern Champaign.. confusing. so when i am looking for homes does it matter if a house is in the "safe" area of West Urbana but geographically located kind of in Eastern Champaign..

Anyway, thanks for the answer. I think i realized the difference.
If others have more information i would love to hear.

West Urbana is simply the university campus. The university is a buffer between west Urbana and east Champaign.

The houses in the area of Illinois Street, I would say, are clearly in west Urbana; I wouldn't say they're located in east Champaign at all. I hope I understand your question.
That area isn't so bad; they are old houses and it's a pretty quaint neighborhood.

The only residential neighborhood I can think of that is on the border between east Champaign and west Urbana is the neighborhood north of University Avenue and south of Bradley Avenue. That area is impoverished; my co-worker lives there and he does not like it at all.

Savoy is also a nice area; it is much less urbanized than Urbana or Champaign. It's located south of Champaign, near the airport.
The airport is so small that you won't have to worry about noises, tremors, or anything like that from the planes.

Would be happy to send you a grid map of the area; that may help you to make a bit more sense of it.

Illinois street is in grid 56, east of Lincoln street, runs east & west. Is a nice neighborhood, depending on what you are looking for. Houses there tend to be around 50 years old, some very nice & unique, others...not so much. Lots are generally smaller there. So really depends on which house it is you are looking at, and which block. One great advantage is its proximity to campus. One downside is that you will pay quite a bit more that you would somewhere else for the privilege of living that close to campus. Living a few miles more out, can often get you a lot more house for the money.

Also, there is are a lot of differences between buying and living Champaign or Urbana, so you need to take that into account as well.

Personally, I live in sw Champaign, though we have a lot of great neighborhoods here. Just loaded a number of cool pics from our area on my profile.

The only tornado I remember hitting the city hit the far southeast side of Urbana in April 1996 and damaged a few houses and tore the roof off of the IGA, it later strenghtened considerably and wiped out the small town of Ogden killing several people. It was about 8 or 9pm and the rain was so thick you couldn't see more than a few feet in front of you and then in an instant it was clear and you could look straight up nearly 60,000 feet and see the towering cloud tops glowing purple from the lightning. Then I heard nearly every fire engine in town turn on their sirens and I knew there must have been a tornado. Still the odds of any specific area getting hit by a tornado are quite small and I find Thunderstorms to be quite an exhilarating experience. Typically Tornados only occur in early spring when the polar jet stream is still down at relatively low lattitudes, in summer you only get airmass thunderstorms that form in the heat and humidity of the late afternoon and almost never produce tornados.

You are right, Illinois street runs on quite a ways from campus out toward the east side of Urbana. Fortunately, there are numerous great neighborhoods to choose from around CU. Are you specifically looking to be on Illinois street, or still looking around the area?

Feel free to contact me directly if you need more assistance.
