I grew up in Sterling and went to the Quad Cities for college and have lived here ever since. My husband and I bought some gorgeous land in Sterling out in the country to build on but trying to find a decent paying job in Sterling in my husband's field is near impossible. The prospect of sending my child to Sterling schools also does not excite me. There are some good programs there, I graduated and was able to go on to a nice, private college, but from everything I hear now, the schools are in some major financial trouble. I'd like to be closer to my family there but I think as far as education and things for young people to do, there are far better cities out there. But for the mostpart, people are pretty friendly. Maybe it's just a better town for older people.

If that is what you trying to get away from then this is not the place for you. We have a heavy Meth and Coke problem here. As far as gangs we have all of then except the Hell's Angels in town. The latin Kings are really bad here and we have a break off of the bloods and crips. They are coming in from Chicago and taking over the area.

I am a young professional moving to the Sterling area. How is the job market for someone with a professional degree? What kind of night life is there? Any opera, ballet, restaurants? Any culture? How is the single life?

Being the cultured young lad that you are, I'm sure you're already familiar with the world-renowned Rock Falls Philaharmonic, so I won't belabor the point. And when parents of top dancers ponder where to send their children to develop their talent, it's often a tough call between The Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, The Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, or the Corn Stubble Ballet Academy in Sterling.

Thread bump by a troll...nice.
I grew up in a small town near Sterling, I have a lot of family in that town too. It's a decent town, not bad at all.
For the people that were trashing NW Illinois, obviously no clue. There are a number of decent places throughout the area and parts of that area are just gorgeous. Byron is a really nice small town, nuclear power plant provides a lot of nice income for the school there...I have a cousin or two that teach there.

Does Rock falls/sterling have a China or korea town? How about stuff for kids to do- zoos, children's museums, aquariums? How about mosques and synogogues for alternative faiths? How about an investing club or white collar segment? How about a job that pays more than $10/hour for someone other than an MD? Why would someone in their right mind live in one of these dumps?

You are too small minded to bother explaining the attractions of living in a smaller town.
As for the area, they do actually *gasp* have alternative faiths in the area.
My sister makes an excellent living there after attending a high-end University.
Oh yeah, I grew up one of those "dumpy towns" and was a national merit finalist and got into whatever university I wanted.
I'm wiping you off my shoe now...mmmmmkay.
