I used to live in that area and any time we had to pass through East St. Louis to get anywhere, the doors on the car got locked and the windows were tightly rolled up. Period. As of now, nice neighborhoods do not exist in East St. Louis. It may change some day, but I don't see it happening any time in the next 5 or so years.

Just when you it couldn't possibly get worse:

"It’s open field day now," said Tracy, the pastor of Straightway Baptist Church here. "The criminals are going to run wild."

The whole story:

I'm positive there are some good people living in E. St. Louis, but, being from nearby and from reading E. St. Louis news and seeing the area, I wouldn't go near the place unless I had too.
There aren't any redeeming quialities there. Every year it goes further downhill. Just about when you think the place can't get any worse, it does.
But, I did notice the last time I had to go down Route 3 some of the adult movie places had burned. But, knowing the area, they will never clean up the burned sites.

It won't get any better, I don't think, unless the State invests a lot of money, which is unlikely.

RUN as quickly as you can away from East St Louis. There is nothing there but violence, crime, death, destruction, etc.

If you are wanting to relocate find a different city this one is barely safe to drive through any time of day or night.

I am curious why anyone in school in New York would even care? Are you studying East St. Louis?

I occasionally check C-D to see what is going on in East Boogie because my husband grew up there.

My in-laws STILL live there despite making a decent middle class income. My mother-in law is unrealistically in love with her city. She will argue with me day and night that the crime comes from outsiders crossing the river to do dirt. Now in her defense I DO see that happening as there are so many abandoned areas that its easy to go there and commit some of the most heinous crimes ever.

If I had to say an area IS liveable her street is off of State Street--the very first link in the previous post with pictures shows that general region. She lives on Vogel Place. That area USED to be the upper class area ---way back when whites still lived there (before the riots of the 20's). There is a park over there call Frank Holten or something like that and some of the homes over there are not bad. BUT,BUT, BUT--the problem you will have is going to be the possibility of getting mugged, or jacked.

I have been there numerous times, and I stopped going as the kids got older. I just don't want my kids getting hurt or killed down there. My family has NO problems there--I guess because there are a lot of them and they look out for one another. Plus my MIL taught most of the young thugs so they don't go near her house. In my opinion most of the people living there are older folks that are not going anyplace soon (at least this is what my MIL claims).

My husband OTOH, looked at some pics on Youtube and was sold that he isn't going back anytime soon. He saw a LOT of crime and dead bodies growing up.
