Default Anyone know what the area around Portage Ave. near ND is like?

Nice? Safe or unsafe? Middle class? Low class?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Portage Ave/Rd is a long road that runs for approximately eight miles from downtown South Bend up to the Michigan State Line. It is approximately 3 miles west of the ND campus and the area ranges from lower class & more crime closer to downtown to upper middle class and very beautiful homes the further north that you get on Portage.
Generally the areas just west of Portage but south of Elwood are a bit dodgy and are best avoided unless you know someone who lives in that particular area. South of Angela and east of Portage to the St. Joseph River range from a bit nicer to very nice as they are in a few historical districts and very close to downtown and Memorial Hospital.
Overall I would compare the Portage area as being very close to the Eddy St./South Bend Avenue/Corby St. Six Points area. South Bend is a unique town in that you pass through a bad area, a very good area and back through another bad area within a few minutes of each other.
If you are looking for off campus housing there are tons of homes/apartments for rent and the further you get away from the campus the cheaper the rents tend to be. If you are interested in using public transportation Transpo is South Bend/Mishawaka's public bus line with stops all over the place.
I hope my info is of some help to you.
