Children of the corn...
I was born and raised in Indiana...From Fort Wayne. Been around the state all over, but when I turned 22, joined the Navy...
Pensacola FL, Biloxi MS, Kaneohe Bay, HI, and now Key West, FL...
Ain't looking back, that's for sure. If you love it there and it's home, stay put. All of my family did. But if you don't like it, there are plenty of other mediocre places to go. With the same kind of weather, people, and land.
Me, I like diversity, mountains, progression, and ocean. I can't go back...
Love ya Mom and Dad...See ya at Christmas!

It never ceases to amaze me the people who come here and complain about how much they hate it here. Perhaps the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...
People are in no way obligated to like their new state once they move there, but after reading many of the comments in this thread alone it seems as if some people are complaining for the sake of complaining.
Honestly, there are much worse places to live than Indiana. If you're that miserable here, it's either because you didn't your research about this state beforehand, or you somehow set yourself up to be miserable here (i.e. having a preference for warm weather and beaches and moving here anyway). Either way, it really is what you make of it half the time.

I would recommend Indiana for people looking for a quiet, stable place to raise their families. That is what it is.

So, if you have a family you would move back?

Please remember that the Salem Witch Trials were held in Salem, Mass, not Salem, Indiana. I understand your tribulations, however...growing up in rural Indiana does have it's many disadvantages. However, despite running away from southern Indiana more than once, I always return, and have now returned for the final time to raise my children and live with my family.
Growing up here, I thought the only thing to do was get involved with drugs and alcohol and get into trouble, now that I am grown with my own family, I see many more options and opportunities. I know that the smaller towns can be rather clannish, but my town has never been disrespectful or rude to outsiders or newcomers...including accepting my black husband wholeheartedly into a predominantly white community.
I understand the weather issues you have with Northern Indiana, it can be miserable at times (I lived in North Chicago for almost a year and fled back to Southern Indiana after the first winter), but I'd rather have the changing seasons instead of the constant heat I dealt with in Houston, Texas (talk about rude people!).
Hope you all find what you're looking for, but I'll keep my small Indiana town.

Especially if you are an elementary teacher! At one school I applied at, I was told there were over 4000 applications for only 10 positions!

I was born and raised in Indiana. There are other nice places, but Indiana is very beautiful especially in the South like New Albany, Madison, etc. ! Where I live is in the mid way between Indy, Louisville and Cincinnatti. The best of everything. And yes it is a great place to raise a family. Some educational and certain career offerings are less likely here, however, the quality of life is so good. There is PLENTY to do, just look around.

Re: Can't wait to head back to Minnesota
DH and I are desperately trying to find jobs in Minnesota so we can return. We love to fish and hunt and where we are here in Bloomington there just aren't enough opportunities to live the way we desire. Don't mind the cold cold weather in Minnesota-it is offset by the beauty of the surroundings and the outdoor fun we have when there.
Nothing against IN just really too hot and humid for us in the summer and not cold enough in the winter. crazy eh?
So if anyone knows anyone in MN looking for a very talented graphic artist please give us a hit. Thank you very much.

We're considering a move to Terre Haute from Denver, if the job works out. Originally from central IL, I'm assuming similar weather?

Not sure I agree with all that. Our limitless opportunities for recreation still require money for the most part. Which the average Montanan seems to be having less and less of anymore. I mean our economy sucks! I know people from Boise who would like to move back here and can't because our cost of living is too high. How sad is that. And I have not noticed friendliness oozing out my neighbors ears lately. People here have just as much capacity for hatefulness and hostility as the next I would imagine.
