We moved to Indy in 78 because it was the only place in the country where the people seemed to like the military men that were at Ft. B. Harrison. My husband was mightily impressed and brought me to see Indy.

I'm not really posting this to rant or anything I'm just wondering what makes people like it so much? Is it something that I don't see or what? The cost of living is reasonable I guess but after seeing some other cities in other parts of the country, the Louisville area is far behind.

I am planning to move away to the Dallas/Fort Worth area within a year or two, likely permanantly. I grew up here and never liked it at all. I don't like the weather, it gets too cold in the winter time and the early spring and late fall are usually pretty much too cold too, making for about 5 months of cold weather. I don't mind the heat in the summer I just don't like the cold. Another reason is that I don't think there is much at all to do around here. I am a huge sports fan and hate not having any pro sports teams. Yeah you have U of L but A) I don't like them and B) I'm much more of a pro kind of person. The Bats are a joke to me although I would agree that they have made the best out of what they have. For triple A, the stadium is pretty nice. I just never did like it around here. Am I missing something or are the people too narrow minded to see that there are better places or maybe this is just where they are from and don't know any different?

I in no way am intending to offend anyone or start anything up... I'm just seeing if anyone else views it the way I do.

You hit it right on the head. Southern Indiana is a hole for the most part. Its just that they really do think they have accomplished something around here when they get some minimum wage jobs. They just don't get it in Southern Indiana. And you think New Albany and Louisville is bad. You need to come up to the sticks. Thats a whole new culture itself.

I have no intentions or desire to makes this my perminate base for the rest of my life. There is much more to the world than 'good ol' Indy' and quite frankly, with the things are going with our econmy and things here on the West side of Indy, seeing the world seems to be the best opition because as my mother put it, this place will kill you.

I'm not saying that I've never had any good experiences here but sadly, those times were during my childhood when Indy was booming. A trip to the west side will show you nothing more than vacent strip malls and buildings, cash/pawn places and other signs that our econmy is basically tanked as of now. Its also sad that I can't get a decent job here nor can I find one if a place that I'm applying for is going to close in a matter of weeks.

Basically, the entire city/state really needs to rethink its goals on becoming a so-called 'world class city'. I can't believe that it took Indy THIS long to realize that the area around the track lacks so much when it comes to tourism (have you seen those hotels and the little Speedway village?? O_o) and being a person who is more into arts and entertaiment than sports or the new dome, I just feel out of place. Don't get me wrong; the art scene in Indy is....good, but it lacks and it just feels like no one here eve gives a damn about art here except for the few artist who are stuck here.

As much as it must pain uber-Indy fans to hear this, Indy isn't the best place for me and I've lived here since before I was even a thought in my parents mind. They were both born here as well so they've been through the state's ups and downs and frankly, they want to get the heck out too.

Heck, Mr. Vonnegut got of here as well didn't he?

I'm with so many others on this board who want to get a taste of life outside the Hoosier state because frankly, the taste of Indiana has gone stale on my tongue. Sure we will come back and visit, but we have other places to go and see. Maybe if things improve (Ballard, I'm lookin' at you) we may change our minds but for the time being, no; we DON't like living here.
Another excellent post. Its like that in Southern Indiana as well. Just don't talk about it, because you will pee off one of the local yokels. They want people here that think the same way they do. Which is generally small. Its a small world here and you can expect your talents to be wasted if you stay here. So best of luck for you and heres to hoping you find someplace to live that actually has a future. Not a few old boarded up houses and pitiful automotive factories. Thats the only way they think around here.

I hope you enjoy Texas if you go there, I can not imagine ever wanting to move to a state that produced W. Just a personal opinion, move to New Mexico or Arizona instead, better culture.
I wouldn't go to Texas and would instead look at NM, AZ, NC, or some other southern State. As far as Indiana, it lacks culture, basic education, and people with common sense.

I think a lot of it is with the people. You have a lot of small minds in Indiana. For some reason, these people like to play cornhole and thats about it. You're not going to find much diversity and instead a lot of people with small ideas about race, religion, etc. Its just that they think small. They don't have the depth of ideas that your average city or suburb dweller has. I go to Louisville, KY all the time and I can say it beats anywhere in rural Indiana hands down. Thats even in Ky which in some ways is a less progressive state. However, around the larger Metros in KY its much better. Less people with the same views on everything.

I really hope that the folks that are so ardently anti-Southern Indiana are wrong. I moved to Madison in May and just relocated to New Albany. I escaped New England to come here and so far I love it. I have not yet encountered the small-mindedness, the insular community, the backwards attitudes- none of it! Everyone has been overwhelmingly welcoming to us and we are pleased to call ourselves Hoosiers. The ONLY thing I miss about New England is our sports teams- and I can watch them and support them from here.

I find the this thread interesting. I grew up in IN and now live in TX, and we've been trying to move back for a while now. I think most of the comments have to do with small town more than the state itself, and believe me, small towns and small town mentalities are EVERYWHERE. We live about two hours away from Dallas, and we're constantly called Damn Yankee (we grew up in SW IN) I've been told I'm going to hell twice because I'm not a certain denomination, I've had my life threatened and my property damaged twice, and no one around here wants to think about life outside of their small world. In fact, the only friends I have here are those who moved here like we did and are also ostracized for that fact alone. Now, I love Dallas and visit as often as I can, but I am a small town girl at heart, and this small town won't give me a chance, so this state doesn't work for me.

I had my qualms about IN before moving out, but that grass really isn't greener down here. I see IN in a whole new light and am glad for it. Everywhere has econmoic woes, so don't think you'll get away from that. Every state has simple minded ninnies, unfriendly cliques, and all small towns lack the culture of the big city. I think it's great that those of you who are able to move are planning to move to a city that fits you best. I've learned the hard way that it doens't matter where you live, but you have to love it, or at least like it, to be happy. I know IN isn't the best place for everyone, but with all my family and friends who care about me still living there, and the prettiness of the hills and forests vs. NE Texas piney, thick, flat woods (which is so not pretty in my opinion), I can't wait to move back.

For those of you thinking of moving to Dallas, it really is a nice city, and it's going to continue on it's economic boom for a while. Austin is also a very nice city.

Best of luck to all of you!

I'd honestly take Oakland or even Richmond over 98 percent of Indiana towns.

Isnt all this Indiana bashing just another case of outsiders coming to a new place and expecting the locals to change? You should adapt or get the hell out. The locals shouldnt have to change to suit you! JMO
