Madison, IN - Are there any bad areas?
After reading some posts on this board I am interested in Madison, IN. I see some affordable homes listed on a few internet sites, but not being familiar with Madison I don't know if there are any less desirable neighborhoods to live in. If a house is cheap because it's a fixer that's no prob as I have done a total rehab before, but if the area is unsafe then that is not something I want to deal with. Thanks in advance to anyone who posts (or private message).

Sorry Elle, I haven't found out anything yet. Although, I did hear that Indiana gets a lot of grey and overcast (they call it gloom) so because of that I have been looking more closely at other areas of the country with a bit more sunny days. I haven't abandoned the idea of Madison but I also haven't made a decision where to move to yet either. If I have a chance to go through Madison in a few weeks while I'm driving around the midwest, I will take pics and post any other information I find.

one of my favorite places in the state!
Madison is WAY cool. What have you heard about the weather? It's been sunny a lot lately.
Madison has several wineries, a vital downtown and cool festivals. And I LOVE the river walk.
Neighborhoods arent bad.

My Aunt & Uncle live in Madison and I haven't seen any bad areas in my trips to that area.
The Madison Regatta is awesome.

I live 20 miles North of Madison and have worked there for 6 years. Wonderful city to live in, great school systems, very spirited community. Like anyplace it will have areas that most would not wish to live in but overall a very nice area.

I lived in Madison for most of my life growing up and if I were you, I would stay away from Windridge Drive apartments because they are low income apartments and my ex-husband used to buy crack and meth there. (thus the ex part) Overall, Madison is quiet and a nice place. Right across the river in Milton is nice on the hill, not so much down by the river. The schools in Tremble County Kentucky are better than on the Indiana side. They have more funding. It is crazy because when I was growing up, we moved to Milton and we almost had to drop a grade because how far advanced the high school was in Kentucky verses Indiana. They were teaching robotics and crap like that, while the Jefferson High School in Indiana had really outdated computers. Jeff High had a football team and Tremble County didn't. I guess Indiana traded knowledge for a jock strap. I am not totally knocking the schools in Madison because there are great teachers there who care about what is learned in the classroom. I also attended Hanover High School for my senior year and the basket ball coach was also the algebra teacher and he was great! Hanover is about 10-15 minutes away from downtown Madison. I live in Lafayette, IN now because I am in college. I really miss the Regatta and the Chitaqua!!! There aren't very many antique stores up here and I miss those too!!!
P.s. My ex does not live in Madison any more, and the last I heard is that he was in jail. So, no worries there!
Hope this was helpful...

Madison- a very pretty, decent town
Yes, Virginia there are some bad areas- namely in Trimble county, Ky., an area that prides itself on ignorance, Klan membership, and the number of county residents currently residing at the state correctional reservation in Lagrange-Oldham county, Ky. I have spent some lovely hours of escape in Madison, and think it is a true gem of a river town.

Dancing Phoenix- if you are still around- could you give us some more insight about Madison and Hanover? I am very interested in the housing situation and commute from Madison to Hanover College. I have seen a few apartments listed in the Courier, but not much else online at any of the rental sites.
Thanks!
