Hi! I just returned from a house-hunting trip two weeks ago to the South Bend/Elkhart area. I was all over Middlebury, Goshen, Elkhart, Mishawaka and Granger. I know a GREAT relocation realtor and can't say enough good about my experieince with her (Elkhart County Homes for Sale). Granger in the Penn School District is what we chose and we're coming from Seattle. I've lived in Arlington, TX, too so . . . if you're used to convenience and ease in shopping, location, etc. Granger would definitely be worth checking out. My friend's a school teacher in the Michiana area and thinks that the Penn system would be great to work for because it's a corporation. We;re excited about it and all that it has to offer. JMHO. Good luck on your move! We head out the end of July because school starts on August 15th.

The ice isn't too bad in SB ... now central indiana is another issue completely! SB has it pretty covered though. If there's a hint of a big snow or an ice storm, they have the trucks out before it starts (similar to the way Chicago and NWI handle the weather) ... now central indiana is another issue!

Good luck with finding a rental house. We are looking for rentals now, (would love Penn district) but not having much luck.

So if we are driving up to SB and going through central indiana.. should we reconsider moving in may? I dont want to get any bad weather that we cant drive the moving truck in! thanks!

No, don't reconsider because the winters are so hit or miss now. Just watch the weather and you'll be fine.

Jo-El,
I we found a place in Granger also, & will be moving the end of this month. Would love to meet new families to the area, who have relocated like we did. Like getting to know the area together.

Jo-El,

We moved our family to Granger almost 3 years ago from DC/northern VA. Looked at Middlebury and Granger based on the schools (used to be a great Indiana school website with individual school data). We picked Granger - although it meant a 50 min commute for me - based largely on the schools, plus more diversity, and proximity to 'creature comforts' you become accustomed to in larger cities. Really can;t go wrong either way. Mishawaka apparently has some very nice areas as well, and South Bend schools seem to be aggressively trying to keep smart kids in the system through the magnet schools.
