I read your advice and I will look into Mishawaka as well as consider Fort Wayne again. I also considered the Louisville/Evansville area.
To answer you, I've always moved a lot, I can't stay in place and I always have to feel free, which I achieve by not staying at the same place for too long. But this time I found my place to stay!! Or to be back to, for good ^^
I grew up in South Bend (many years ago) and it has changed a lot. Mishawaka is a much better place to live than it used to be.
I now live in south central Indiana (Bloomington). I like it better down here with the hills and greenery.
You are also not that far from things to do if you like concert, theatre, etc.
I have been all over the country and all over Indiana and since I'm stuck in Indiana until my job transfers me I chose South Bend/Mishawaka. Lots of shopping and does not have as much of a country vibe as many other Indiana cities. Little more urban, though not my cup of tea for long term living, for now it works.
I respect your love of Indiana, though I never felt at home here, I wish you luck.
Wow, I completely feel for you! I grew up in southbend IN, I just moved away because I had always wanted to live in FL. I am so homesick for Indiana. I realized that nice weather all the time is nice but having friends and family by your side is the most important thing ever to me. after about 5 days of living in FL, I have had a huge pit in my stomach ever since. I don't feel like doing anything, but packing up my things and comming home. I realized now how much I loved Indiana, and the seasons and yes the crazy snowed in days! I have been trying to give FL a chance, but just feel my home is where my heart is. I feel like everyone keeps telling me oh your so brave for moving away, and good for you for following your dream, and you can do it, your strong....the truth is, I just want someone to tell me, yes come home! Because being all by yourself, is taking its toll, and i'm not a strong as everyone else seems to think. I say if you want to go back to Indiana...then go for it!! that's where I think I will be ending up in a few more months. Its a great place to live, and everyone is always sooo nice and friendly, even when your in walmart! I miss and long for that soooo much!
I grew up in Kokomo and Noblesville areas and moved to Boise, ID for the military and now live in Austin, TX. I couldnt wait to get out of Indiana! That place sucks the life out of you! You went to Rhode Island? No wonder you miss Indiana. Thats one of the only places that sucks worse! I spent the first 22 years of my life in Indiana and never will return. Keep all that redneck joker bull crap! Indiana is a joke. and except for parts of southern Indiana, it is so flat and ugly. what a boring place!

lol wow this post gets an A for trolling.
If Indiana is boring then obiviously A you didn't leave the house. Thats not Indiana's fault
or B you didn't try looking for stuff to do.
For Starters theres the Indiana Dunes.
Hoosier National Forest.
White River State Park in Indy with a large amphitheater for concerts.
Monument Circle and Circle Centre.
younger singles theres Broad Ripple Village and Mass. Ave.
Countless Caves and Lakes in Southern Indiana
Indy 500 every year and the massive marathon and events before it.
Gen Con Indy the largest Role Playing Convention in North America. Went to it myself and found it to be interesting.
Icing on the cake is Indiana Beach in Monticello.
So again why are you coming here trolling?
Not to mention Texas and Indiana are VERY similar.
Hypocracy at its finest.
Also i could keep going on with this list but i think you get the Idea.
Indiana isn't going to cater to the Lazy. Leaving the house once in awile is a plus

You don't know much about Indiana. Only Central Indiana is Flat. Southern Indiana (not just parts) is hilly. Northern Indiana is dunes

I was amused by your post because we have "switched places". I moved from Austin TX to Columbus IN about 11 years ago.
I still consider myself a "naturalized Texan" (I'm a native of San Diego) since I went to school there, got married into a big Texas family there, and raised my daughter there.
I finally left because I felt that Austin was just getting too big for me. It was starting to remind me of my native So. CA! Those traffic jams on MoPac and 183? Yikes. What finally broke me was the heat...and the year we had the smoke from the fires in Mexico.
What I miss? Swimming at Barton Springs, running at Town Lake, riding mtb at City Park and of course the fabulous fabulous Tex-Mex food!!!
I'm living a lovely small town in the Midwest, which was kind of my dream. I love the four seasons. I love that, in October, I am wearing sweaters and baking bread and making soup. I even like raking leaves and shoveling snow.
I Love being surrounded by abundant agriculture. Picking apples from the trees in my yard, buying local produce at the Farmers Markets ( I know TX farms too, but of course the crops are so different!).
I love XC skiing any chance I get. The mountain biking here has improved leaps and bounds over the last several years (amazing for a place with no mountains!).
Indianapolis continues to improve IMO. The art museum is attaining national stature, the downtown area is coming along nicely. The city seems open and welcoming to new business ventures.
Anyway, hope you enjoy Austin! Eat some migas and drink a 'rita for me. But don't write off your home-state entirely yet.

Interesting, because outside of Austin, Texas is full of what you describe above.
