-Story Inn in Story, Indiana claims to have a ghost in one of the rooms.
-Stepp Cemetery near Martinsville has a folktale about a witch who roams the cemetery at night. There are as many versions of this one as there are people who tell it.
-Bigfoot sightings in Hoosier National Forest near Highway 446 in Monroe County and also to the east in Brown Co.
-The Lanier Mansion in Madison is said to be haunted by the original owner.
-The Tulip Trestle in Greene Co. is supposedly haunted by a railroad worker who fell from the trestle to his death about 100 years ago.

- The Grey Lady of Willard Library in Evansville (stories differ about who she actually is, but there's enough weirdness going on in that place for even the skeptics to agree *something* is amiss)

Most of the popular haunted places like the Blue House of Lights in Indianapolis and the school bus crash at 116th & Allisonville Rd in Indianapolis (and of course, every college campus has a tower or floor of a dorm "haunted" by some freshman suicide victim from the 50s or whatnot), have been debunked, but people still "believe" in them because the stories are so popular and have been published in various folk legends books.

The best ghost stories I know of though are the ones that aren't published in books and whatnot. Those are the kind that only locals know about.. and not the ridiculous kinds that occur in every single small town in America (there are only so many places a bus load of kids died and haunt the intersection...)

There's a house in Mt. Vernon, Indiana that actually has underground tunnels beneath it. Most have collapsed over time (there are three), but one goes in the direction of the river and the other two go towards other homes. The home is three stories and the top floor caught on fire at one point in time and a few ex-slaves were killed. At any rate, the house is pretty creepy, even after being completely renovated a few years back. Going into it as it was... that was pretty freaky. It had been empty for decades, but the previous owners basically packed themselves and their clothes up and left literally everything else. I always have to wonder about homes in which the owners just left without even bothering to pack. I've seen a few like that. You always hear of that sense of being watched... you feel that just standing in the front yard of this place. Inside, doors open and close on their own.. there are bangs from the third floor... plenty of gusts of wind and drafts... but the house is extremely old, so all of this can be attributed to the age of the home, of course. Maybe that's true. But something about it just feels wrong.

At any rate, there are plenty of "haunted places" in Indiana, just as there is in any other state. However, I'd say the creepiest places are the ones that only a handful of people know about... they tend to be private residences or cemeteries in the middle of a woods that no one knows about or an abandoned factory that few people have been able to get in to.

Elliott Hall, a dorm at Ball State, is supposedly haunted by "William". According to the story, William enrolled at Ball State in the fall of 1946 on the GI Bill. A disabled veteran of World War II, he had been terribly burned and disfigured. Because of his horrifying scars, William had a difficult time making friends and spent most of his time studying alone in the 4th floor library of Elliott Hall. The loneliness took it's toll and one evening in January of 1947, he hung himself from the heavy rafters in the library. He supposedly still walks the halls. No documentation can be found on William, but there are odd things that do happen. In the mid 1980's I lived in Elliott and awoke in the middle of the night and needed to use the restroom. As I walked down the hall towards the restroom, I saw a mist float down the North stairwell from the 3rd floor. Another time, my then girlfriend, now wife of 25 years, lived on the third floor directly underneath the library. She had been alone in the library studying, when she went downstairs to her room, she immediately could hear the furniture sliding across the floor above her. The only way to reach the library is by the north stairwell and she had met no one coming up the stairs when she left. The library is small, and at least 25 years ago, seemed to have the original furniture from the 1930's. It definitely felt creepy.

It is very Easy to dismess any thing or expereance, which one hasn't experensed the Experence, Namley an Experence which can not be exlained in a manner that would be ,,, excepted by "All'
Those that would explain such an expereance as fiction or figment of the mind, would hold the same thought and or feelings, of the explanation of a Soldier that has seen death many times over, witnessed some of His fellow Soldiers Being Blown apart, or fallen from one Shell , bullet, or such , as being a John Wayne Movie, just such , made up a figment of the mind,
One has to Have been there, War, or in the presence of the unexplained.Such as,,,,
1935/36. West of Lewisville, Ind.My Father and two Brothers, went to the Home of a Family Friend, just East of Dunreath,Ind. after dark ,with the intention of picking up a Kitchen Stove, and Yes a Nanny Goat.( For Milk),
The Familys had known each other for several years, the Brothers of Both Familys being of the same ages, ( Folks Visited often as on Sundays).
My FAther and I were out side as the Boys wereto bring the Big Kitchen Stove out of the House, The Home being a Very Large Brick Home on the North Side of US40 Being after dark, there was a light on a Pole above the gate that was hinged to the side of the Barn which was app, 100 ft East of the House, My Father and I both witnessed a Man, Whom We both thought was the Man of the House, coming towards the Gate, And Yes,, walked through the Gate, which was closed, turned and walked through the small door which went into the Barn, neither of the Gate nor Small Barn door were open.. Needless to say We did NOT get the Nanny Goat that Night...
The House is listed in a Book Called ,"Ghosts of Henry Country"..

Default Scary Story of a different Nature.

Back in 1946, We lived on a Farm, Dad was a tenent hand working for a Mr Hall. the House was around 1 3/4 miles East of Hiway 103, and around 5 miles South of New Castle,Ind. There was a Mr Dann, in New Castle ,He and His Family Had a Junk Yard, "Dann Brothers", over the Years, if a Young Boy would bring some piece of Iron, Steel, or such, Mr Dann Would Give Him a Dime to go to the Afternoon Show at the Prince or Royal Theater, """GOOD MAN, Mr Dann,".I still Hold Him in High Esteem..

Well Any way on with the Story, This Day I and a Friend went to see the ""'WOLF Man Meets Frankenstein""", which let out after dark, The Friend Stayed in Town at Home, But , Now Ol Jim (16)had to walk to the edge of town, then Hitch HIke on, 5 miles South of New Castle. which I did, and when I got out of the Car. I had about 1/2 mile to the Flat Rock Bridge, Now I knew that Ol Dog that was on the other Side of the Bridge Sure liked to get ahold of a Guy's Back Pocket, Well I slinked along real Quit like an Indian, I could Hear that Ol Dog, kinda yepping , He knew some one or something was around , But I had the wind in My Favor. made it across the bridge, down a little sloop, across the Fence, the Ol Dog let out a louder Yep. I knew He was aware of Me, But wasn't just sure just what or who., I made my way a Little down river along the Bank. Being very firmilure With the River as Most Boys of the Time and from the Area were, Then cut back towards the other Road, as I started up out of the river valley. Yep I knew there was an Old Grave Yard Up on the Hill, just West of the House Where the Old Dog Lived.
( the Old Dog ,wasn't old, Just My Way of giving Him Respect and distance).
I now am about 200 Yards west of the Grave Yard,
Which is, as said up on a Hill. And ,,Wouldn't You Know it the Moon is Shinning , Now I am West of the Grave Yard climbing out of the Valley, Kinda a rolling Hill area.....And Yes ,I know I have to"" Look back"" , no other thing I Have to look, Well Howdy the Moon is Right in line with the Head Stones, just over the top of them, And YEP there is Something Moving, Yep Jim Ur' righ that is a set of Hornes Moving on the top of that Grave Stone.
Now Remember I had Just watched, "Wolf MAn Meets Frankenstein.....
Well I'll Say this.. It didn't take Much for these feets to get to Moving up over the first, fence line across the Road over the next fence Line,
On across The fields about 1/2 Mile to The House..across the fields which were Low rolling Hlls and Gulllies. Across the fence back of Our House. and in to Bed..
Now The next Morning,,
Yep. I had to go back and Look, I JUST HAD TO... Found there were some Cattle in the Grave Yard Grazeing , keeps the grass down around the Graves, which Date back in to the Early 1880/s,,,,

All isn't always what it Seems to Be, The Mind is a very Scary Place Some times...

God Blessings, ToAll..
