Black cloud alert...Dont read my opinions if you like Indiana... Just a warning...
There is nothing "beautiful" about snow in my unpopular opinion. Slipping and sliding and wet shoes are not my idea of fun. Getting stuck and being late for work and getting a write up is not a day in the park either. Wearing layer upon layer to keep from dying is also not my idea of fun or beauty. It's like looking and a Coral snake, it looks pretty but it can kill you just the same.
There are so many varied opinions on snow and bad weather. Some people actually enjoy the change of seasons. Others, like me, despise it and do something about it...like moving.
Nobody likes to be depressed, but cabin fever does not discriminate. If your moving to Indiana (Northern IN is all I can speak for) be prepared for very unreliable weather patterns. For example at the last minute we had to have our wedding indoors because unpredicted showers showed up and drenched our ceremony, hence another brick in my already bitter wall of Hoosier hate. Some have a much easier time dealing with the weather and that is awesome, it's a quality I wish I had. But unfortunatly I don't, so just a warning, your coming from Cali to the midwest. On top of cultural differences you will have to be prepared to alter every aspect of your life to cater to mother nature. Fun!
Oh, and if you own a convertible, sell it now, you wont need it here.

One more thing...
I'm very happy that many of you like it in Indiana (I notice it's mostly family oriented people), but what attracts you to this state? For the life of me I can't figure this out. My wife and I have been trying our butts off to get out of this place, and many of you seem to really enjoy living here.
I have worked with several people over the years from California and most of them are very happy here until after a year or two and they see that there's really not much here outside of family and work. Seems like Hoosiers only want to talk about work. I never got that either. Guess I don't belong here. But I've always known that

I see. You'll fit right in here in podunk. Nah, just messing with you. Indiana isn't that bad if your into raising a family and you like country living and don't mind wretched weather (Northern part). About your home, we already know we will never be able to buy a house in SoCal, but that's fine because luckily we both have no desire to have a 30 year burden. Too confining. But thanks for the offer just the same and good luck in your venture to Indiana.

I can't afford to buy a home here in Indiana, and I make over 50K, so I don't get the big affordability thing here.
Jobs aren't secure, so if you buy a home, and lose a job, like I have lost 2 jobs here already, you're going to have to foreclose.
For me, it's the attitudes here.

Personally, I like NW INdiana.
Valparaiso is the best city in this area that falls under your criteria. Clean, safe, affordable,, good schools, close to Chicago, near Lake Michigan, a small college town with a small town feel.
I spent some time there while attending Valparaiso University.

Towns like that are hellish for single people.

Indiana-California
I am in the process of moving FROM Indiana TO California. I can't tell you where the best place to move is but I can share a little bit of what i have observed over the last 5 years.
The people are very nice(not genuine) but to your face nice. Most of the north is made up of small towns, which means that you will have NO privacy. Most people live, work and die within a very small radius of where they were born and their family therefore they have a very limited perspective and life is very back-or-white. Most people are not college educated and have little interest or awareness of other cultures, countries or people. This does not make them "bad" just be ready for patriotism that sometimes borders on ethnocentricsm and a lot of statements that start with"them" or "us" and a lot of explanations about life based on "the way God made it".
And of course don't forget, which I was not aware of until my arrival. Indiana's contribution to US history is the birthplace of the KKK. Therefore, be ready for some seep seated perspectives not based in anything remotely logical.
If you want to be close to family on the east coast consider OH..........

Tend to disagree. Indiana is changing. Though there is that element in Indiana and many other small midwest towns, it is different in northwest Indiana, Indy and college towns. The above quote I would say is more appropriate for southern Indiana rather than northern.

I have run into, repeatedly, the same hostile "You're an outsider" garbage since I came here. I have met a few good souls, but I would say most, and this is most of the women I have met are mean-spirited and gossipy.
I can't stand it anymore. Some overgrown sow with a ring on her finger isn't better than me and I am tired of their stupid competitiveness like that on the job.
