Default Safest Neighborhoods near Notre Dame

Another Grad student moving to South Bend wants to know where to look for housing. Would like to be close to campus but concerned about crime stats. Would be extremely appreciative of general information that locals can provide. Looking in the Northwest triangle area and considering stuff north of the river but some neighborhoods look scruffy and statistically its all twice as dangerous as Auburn, AL my home. Let me know whats going on????

If the neighborhood "looks scruffy," then look elsewhere. The University is working hard to help redevelop neighborhoods near the university, but there are still large pockets of iffy blocks. To some extent, you can let the price be your guide -- if the rent seems too good to be true, there is probably a reason for that. There are some very nice and relatively expensive homes along Notre Dame Avenue, for example, but if you head down the block past Club 23, it's a completely different story. In general, north is better than south.

Yes, agree with claremarie. If the neighborhood looks like a safe place, well kept homes, then it will most likely be a great place to live. There are some iffy neighborhoods, but compared to ten years ago, this area has seen a dramatic uptick in nicer homes around the campus.

I dont know about that - I have posted in this forum before but i had a friend of mine who went there and she lived directly south of campus near bader or rockne drive
very nice neighborhood. within walking distance of the campus and mainly residential and very quiet.......

north ? I remember a place called castle points - which was a dump!
stay away from that place it was really really run down... we were scared away by the smell of what appeared to be bug spray of some kind and cracking walls.

Look in the local classifieds or call the campus maybe they can give you a list of places that are reputable.

Notre Dame definatley makes up South Bend and not the other way aruound

Castle Point is an apartment complex that is really its own neighborhood. Are you looking to buy a house, rent a house, rent an apartment, etc?
