Can anyone tell me about Anderson? My husband and I had recently been thinking of moving to Indianapolis but we have come across some really decent homes in Anderson. Does anyone know what the job market is like there? My husband is disabled so other than his once a month check all bills are mine and so I would need to be able to have job oportunities. If I read it right Anderson is about 70 thousand which is a decent sized area. My husband prefers smaller towns but I usually always choose the city for job purposes so any info would be great. Thank you.

Job market in some of these former manufacturing hubs is not that great. I have some friends I know who still live there but have to get jobs a big distance away. Indiana has experienced a loss of good manufacturing jobs (like Ohio, Michigan, etc.) and as a result there are towns with lots of homes but fewer and fewer people.
If by "decent" you mean cheap for what you get, there is a reason. They are very hard to sell/rent because the population is not increasing and the jobs are not there to bring more people in to town. Living around Indianapolis will get you more opportunity for jobs. |

Anderson has a lot of problems, mainly due to the massives losses of manufacturing jobs in the automotive sector. It's really sad. You may want to look into Pendleton or Lapel.

The Anderson police dept and mayor have been on the news alot for being corrupt. The auto slump has slowed down th eeconomy in Anderson with big layoffs at the assembly plants. Its a little over an hour drive to Indianapolis and th etraffic can get heavy.

I don't live in Anderson, but know quite a few people who do. If the niceness of the people speaks to the area itself, then I'd say it's a winner.

I have some extended family in Anderson and I travel there about twice a year from Fort Wayne. As others have said, the people there are great, but the job/economic situation is currently struggling. In your position, I'd find a job before moving to ensure there aren't any surprises. Indianapolis or even Fort Wayne might be better for job opportunities in the future by comparison.

I just moved to Anderson about a year and a half ago. It isn't as good ad I thought. There are no jobs and the people are rude. There are many houses available (due to the loss in jobs),and most are buying on contract. Just don't make the mistake and move behind St Johns hospital.

Lapel is a nice rural town near Anderson. Pendleton & Yorktown are also nice.
