Well, I may have a job offer soon in Indy and here's what I need :
I'll work from home most days, but will go to downtown Indy 1-2 days a week, flying out on day trips 4 or 5 times a month (IND airport). We have 3 kids in elementary. Looking to be close to Target/grocery/malls/sports complexes, etc. I'm thinking Carmel/Fishers, but is that too far from the airport? Do Indiana folk accept outsiders? Here in the DFW area there is a lot of corporate relocation so everyone is from somewhere else. any help is much appreciated. thanks! |

In recent years, Indianapolis proper has become a fairly liberal city. Be wary though, the suburbs are heavily conservative. That being said, people in Indy are fairly tolerant while the suburban areas arent so much. You'll probably want to look at the westside of town; very affordable. I would not suggest Carmel or Fishers because of the long commutes. Most sports facilities are downtown, and there is a great mall downtown. The airport is located on the westside of town as well.

Before you get all fired up about Fishers and Carmel take a quick look at the Center Grove area of Johnson County. It doesn’t have the Fashion Mall or the five star restaurants but there is everything you need without the horrific traffic jams and congestion. If you want to be even closer to downtown and the airport take a look at Perry Township which offers excellent access to both the airport and downtown.
We always liked the south side because it was a great place for families without the “keeping up with the Jones” attitude of the north side. Plus………the south side is cheaper. When we visited Dallas a few years ago we were amazed by how friendly and helpful the people were. I am confident that you’ll find the Midwest almost as friendly. We moved from Indy last year and we very much miss that friendliness. Best of luck in your move. |

We are actually looking for houses in the small town (but for how much longer?) of Bargersville, just south of Greenwood. The commute from Fishers to Columbus is getting tiresome, so if, big IF, our house EVER sells ... we'll be down there with you!

I live in Avon now, and I absolutely love it. The schools are amazing, and the commute downtown isn't too bad (approx. 30 min.). The price of housing is increasing in this area but compared to the suburbs in other cities, it's not bad at all.
My husband works from home too but he travels a few times a month for business. He can be at the airport in 15 minutes on a good day and 30 during the morning rush. Good Luck! |

I live in Plainfield/Avon area and absolutely love it!!! We are close enough to downtown and VERY close to the airport, but far enough from the hustle and bustle. There is a new open air mall in Plainfield and there is a Target and a WalMart here too. It's a very nice area and Avon schools are excellent.
