Default cheap housing near West Lafayette/Lafayette

Considering a move to the Lafayette area and looking for some feedback and opinions about housing prices. It appears that buying a house would be cheaper than renting. I've been looking online, but it is hard to know what the cost situation actually is without seeing the house and area in person. So, I am trying to gauge how cheap of a house we might be able to land. Within 15 min of Purdue, small and dated is ok, don't care about lot size, 2-3 bds, 1ba. In a SAFE neighborhood. Interested in how low you think we might be able to go in terms of cost if we were to a.) Buy or b.) Rent.
