It's located between Columbus and Bloomington on State Road 46. You can check the indiana department of education website for information on their schools. I know they are very small, compared to the Columbus and Bloomington schools. It's artsy, but in a craftsy way. I love visiting there and watching the artists doing their thing.

Nashville, pretty to visit but I wouldn't want to live there
Nashville is beautiful, but I don't know that I would move a young family there. It's has one of the poorest school districts in the state which might not matter since you home school, but Brown County is pretty poor overall. There are some lovely vacation homes, etc., but you really pay a premium for that charming log cabin in the woods or cottage on the lake. One also needs to be careful in making a home purchase there. I've heard that many of the septic systems are failing. You would be closer to Columbus if you needed to go that way for employment, but for college employment you would need to be in central Bloomington or the west side of town for Ivy Tech. Nashville is east of Bloomington. Having said that, if you are looking for a simple, back to nature, rural kind of lifestyle Brown County might be the place for you.

I forgot to answer your question
From the east side of Bloomington to downtown Nashville is about 25 minutes. Probably more during autumn when the tourists are visiting Brown County to see the leaves, etc. To the IU campus about 35 minutes--to Bloomington Hospital about 40, the new Monroe Hospital about 40-50 minutes.

Thanks so much. I definitely want a town with the most possible employment and educational options and the least commute for my DH. I want a place that is such a great town, that we hardly think of leaving for any reason!!!

Might I throw Columbus into your mix? We are actually trying to relo down there from Fishers. Indianapolis is a little less than an hour away, straight up I65. Columbus is a different kind of place. They have some of the most significant architechture in the country (I'm serious). The public school system is good and they have a top rated hospital (Columbus regional). It's a small city that isn't suburban ... yet.
Just something to think about.

Haven't really heard about it before, except as a geographical marker on the way to somewhere else in IN. Good to know!

I'm going to echo Bloomington. I moved there from Chicago for 3 years for college and really enjoyed myself. It is indeed a small town (it was a bit of an adjustment for me) but it is a great little town with a lot to do and plenty of cultural opportunities. I agree with those that say that it gets more icy in the winter than cold and snowy, which wouldn't be so bad, but they aren't all that great at clearing the streets (sand?, what good does that do?). I didn't stick around after I graduated from school and moved back home, but I think that in Indiana, it is probably one of your best bets if you are looking for a college town. That and some of the rural areas surrounding the city are quite pretty.
Question for the folks still around. Has Oliver improved their wines? I loved the winery, but the wines left a bit to be desired.
