We just watched Breaking Away after not seeing it for almost 30 yrs...
Has Bloomington changed much since the movie was made. I imagined it to be more manicured, but it looked a little rough around the edges in the movie. We are hoping to check Bloomington out in a few months.

The movie was made a long time ago, so some things have changed a lot. Downtown still looks pretty much the same...some businesses replaced others. There are a few high rise (maybe 8 stories) apartments around, but pretty much the same. The campus is almost exactly the same with the addition of a few new buildings, and of course the Little 500 is held at a different location now. I don't know what you mean by a little rough though. There are still the student housing section of town with the older, pretty run down homes, but more and more newer apartments are moving in.

Not much has changed, IMO. The stadium where the bike race was held in the movie is now a field, and you cannot drive into campus in front of the admissions building, but other than that... And you also can't swim in the quarries anymore
Most of the housing looks the same.

My concern is that everyone says how beautiful Bloomington is, and we didn't see it in the movie. Is it really a pretty, charming town?

Campus is beautiful, the outlying countryside is beautiful, the parks are very pretty too. The rest of the town is nice, very typical small town Indiana. I don't know if it's any more rough around the edges than any other small town.

It is beautiful. The movie doesn't do it justice in that regard.

That's great to hear. We are looking forward to visiting. Any nice neighborhoods that we should check out. We are interested in neighborhoods zoned for Childs, Jackson and BHSS. It looks like Spicewood is nice. Anything else?
