I live in Twyckenham Hills on the south side and LOVE it out here! City water and sewer, a rather suburban feel and a small, yet adequate shopping district if you don't want to/have time to go out to the mall area. As far as schools are concerned, don't chuck South Bend Schools without looking at them first. There are some pretty good options in the magnet programs, and it is not too hard to get your child into those schools. They score as high (if not higher) on standardized tests as their PHM counterparts, yet your children will still be able to grow up knowing that there ARE a lot of different cultures and socio-economic levels in this nation of ours. LaSalle Academy (grades 5-8), Kennedy Primary, Hamilton Primary (south side), Tarkington Primary (northside) are definite contenders. Dickinson FIne Arts Academy had the highest ISTEP gains of any middle school in the state and received a grade of "A" last year. I agree with whoever it was who posted that you should avoid Mishawaka Schools. They have lower test scores than South Bend and a lower graduation rate as well. Not to mention the fact that some parts of Mishawaka are flat-out redneck. If you want PHM with city utilities, the south side of South Bend (east of Ironwood, south of Ewing) would be the place to be. My kids attend the "dreaded" SBCSC and are thriving. Thye are Pass+ on the ISTEP and have LOTS of extra curricular opportunities. We chose Twyckenham Hills (South Bend Schools) for the simple fact that we didn't want our children to go to a high school of 3500. I, too, was transferred here. I could have easily lived in Granger. Taupe tract mansions are not my cup of tea. The south side has LOTS of housing options, old and new (including BRAND new) with decent sized lots. The crime rate on the south side is also significantly lower that the overall rate. I would avoid the west side like the plague, as it is the part of town that pushes the crime rate higher than it should be. 90% of violent crimes happen in about 5% of SB.

I know a great realtor who could help you with location and school info. If you don't currently have one. And keep in mind, one persons perspective on schools can be different then others. It depends on what is most important to you regarding schools. Each school system has different things to provide your children. Also Granger is not the only city that is in PHM school district, parts of Mishawaka and parts of the South Side of South Bend also are in district.
