I don't care about you taking shots at Fort Wayne. I'm not from here, and honestly I would not be here if not for my job. Of course, that doesn't mean Ft. Wayne is not a decent place to live--it is.
You said it yourself you don't live in Bloomington, so why are you placing it on a pedestal much higher than the rest of the state if you aren't in a position to do so?

Rrah has been very good about giving Bloomington perspectives from a civilian (how was your trip to Columbus btw?)

You are sadly mistaken if you think Bloomington is devoid of its share of "white trash".
It's a common mistake made by many. This is why I don't understand the huge fascination with Bloomington. It's basically Muncie or West Lafayette with hills. Take some time to see the "real" Bloomington outside of the university's influence.

This is a very valid point, get too far on the west and south side of towns (past 37 and south of Hillside, and it's a different world. That being said, the east side, campus and downtown keep you away from the "trash" element.
Now, if you have to go to the Super Wal-Mart on the west side, all bets are off.

Hello? I live down here now. Where isn't there a white trash element in the outskirts of a city? Tell me please!!!

I've been to just about every state in the US, and there is not one state where you will not find "white trash". This is America, folks. Even Southern California, and New York has its fair share.

I grew up in Muncie, moved to Chicago, now I'm living in Bloomington for the past 4 years (not a college student).
Let me tell you, this poster "Colts" is not correct about Bloomington being like Muncie or W. Lafayette with hills. Just because cities like West Lafayette and Muncie have universities like Bloomington, doesn't mean they are identical.
Bloomington has 3 major pharma companies here. Muncie and W. Lafayette are more industrial towns. Bloomington is rated the 5th most educated city in the US by money.com. (look it up yourself...google it).
I find Bloomington to be MUCH more diverse culturally and more educated than anywhere else in Indiana. Outside of the size difference, moving from Chicago to Bloomington was not that much of a change. Both very liberal, progressive towns. Both have a lot of young professionals and things to do.
Again, this is not just limited to the University areas. Bloomington as a whole is like this. The town's election was nearly swept by the Dems again (except 1 republican by 6 votes).
White trash is everywhere in this country. EVERYWHERE. I lived in Chicago and heard many racist and trashy comments from "white trash". The Midwest has a lot more than other places, but Bloomington has less than most.
I guess that's where the "facination" comes from. Bloomington is a progressive town, good shopping, entertainment, amazingly beautiful downtown, culturally diverse resturants, culturaly diverse population, educated people, open minded, etc. The same can't be said of Muncie or W. Lafayette.
That's why everybody loves Bloomington.

Except me.
You have an obvious bias towards Bloomington, and your post reflects this. Do you work for the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce?
I'm going to give you the same advice I gave domer--see Bloomington outside of the school's influence. When you do that, then come talk to me.

Agreed. It's like they're in this fantasy utopia in which Bloomington is the capital.
I suppose they believe that because I (a) don't paint Bloomington as said utopia, or (b) have a strong connection to Bloomington, that my opinion is worthless.
Oh well, such is life. Carry on.
