The Tax Foundation has found that state and local taxes are consuming an increasing share of Hoosier household incomes. Being from another red state (TN), I am somewhat surprised by how high the tax burden is in IN, as it's also a conservative state.

LARRY DeBOER: Has Indiana's tax burden increased?

I would rather pay taxes on income I earn and items I consume than on my dwelling spot. If I can't pay my taxes on my house, I have to live in a box (or worse an apartment). The state has to adjust its income to adjust to the property tax caps, but it was the right thing to do.

My property tax is well over 1%. Local funding for schools, libraries, parks, etc. means your taxes will often exceed the 1% cap.

I would like to see a cap on license plate excise tax

The license plates here appear to be just god awful expensive. I have a 2013 Elantra and am absolutely dreading switching this over. In TN, a standard renewal is $31.50, and I don't recall there being any additional charge for the plate itself. A $500 plate is outrageous. I would object less to such taxes if the roads were in decent condition, but roads here are generally terrible.

My property taxes are a bit less than 1% of assessed value.

I bought two new cars in 2010 and paid about $500 for plates that year TOTAL. I doubt one car will cost you that much.

It is ridiculous. I pay $10.00 more for my 2008 car than my 20 year old car. Yes, the property taxes
are capped but then "they nickle and dime" you on plates, the excise tax for your plates (which were
designed that way to keep other taxes down) county taxes, sales taxes on Amazon
purchases (and when they built the distribution centers several years ago, Indiana agreed not
to charge a sales tax on Indiana residents - that changed this year).
We've paid property taxes on our homes for 30 years and despite the cap, they kept going up
while the assessed market value did not reflect what our homes (in very nice neighborhoods)
could sell for. That also hurt our school districts.
