Hi there! I'm still 1-2 years away from enrolling anywhere, but IU-Bloomington is on my short list for graduate school in my search to study Therapeutic Recreation. I know they run the Bradford Woods site near Martinsville and am considering it as a possible place to work during the school year to gain more work experience alongside my studies. I currently work in outdoor adaptive recreation as an instructor.

Is it realistic to consider working at BW and attending school full time at IUB? The website for BW mentions that housing is provided to instructor staff and program specialists -- a position I'd like, as it's more administrative and that's the direction I want to go with my career. Do you know of any students who work/live there during the academic year while attending class in Bloomington? I read in another thread that the drive from Indianapolis to Bloomington can be a drag because there are a ton of stoplights, but that the road is being converted to an interstate soon...what's the scoop? When will the new road be done?

Or am I just crazy to think this is a viable option?

I am not familiar with Martinsville or BW. It is realistic to live at BW and commute to Bloomington (by taking 37 South) which
is about 19 miles away. Renting in Bloomington will be much higher than in Martinsville. There is also more available to you
in terms of things to do in Bloomington (if that is important for you) for grad and under grad students.
I'm not sure about the Indianapolis question, are you considering on renting there as an option vs Martinsville? If so,
it would be a longer drive (465) to 37 South and there are some stop lights on 37. Not sure about the status regarding
I-69 with St Rd 37.

Build I-69

Many of the Bradford Woods therapeutic programs are summer programs. There are some offerings during the rest of the year, but they are not as large and not all of them are therapeutic programs. For example, the elementary school students from Monroe County (Bloomington) all spend a few days at Bradford Woods. I think the "free rent" would end when the work ends.

Bradford Woods will be about a 30-40 minute drive from Bloomington and will likely remain so even after that section of I-69 is completed. Section 5 of I-69 is the section of the current highway 37 between Monroe County and Martinsville. There are a few reasons why the drive time for that particular drive won't change much--if at all. 1/2 of the drive will be on 37, or 69, and the other half will take you through Martinsville over to 67. One will still need to complete the second half even after the highway is completed. Current speed limits are 60 mph on that stretch of road, but people often go faster. Even if the new speed limit is 70 mph, one is not going to save much time. Finally, the part of 37 that one would use from IU currently has the LEAST number of stoplights. In fact there are no lights between the 45/46 bypass (the road into IU from 37) and 39 (the road one uses to travel from 37 to 67 and Bradford Woods.) Time savings resulting from I-69 will be minimal for that stretch of road. Section 5 is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016. Although some pre-construction activities have begun, most of the work will be done over the next 2.5 years. That means delays and slower speeds for construction.

The completion of Section 5 also won't speed up the trip to Indianapolis much for the same reasons. The vast majority of stoplights are between Martinsville and Indianapolis on what will become Section 6 of I-69. If I recall correctly, there are 17 lights between Martinsville and Indianapolis. I don't know when that section of I 69 is scheduled to begin or end, but I suspect it will be at least 2020 before it is completed. Last I read, they had not even started the environmental studies on that section of the road.

Thanks for info. Not considering living in Indianapolis, that was just the stretch (Indy to Bloomington) mentioned in the other thread I had read. Sounds like (from person below you) that most of the stoplights that clog up traffic are between Martinsville & Indy, not Martinsville or Bloomington.

I agree that I'd probably find more fun things to do in Bloomington!

Thanks for info. If I go to IU and want to work at BW, will probably just look for a place w/ easy access to the highway and/or on the north side of town. I think the "free rent" would definitely end when work ends, as it sounds like winter is a "dead" time up there, with the occasional activity. I've been looking into both BW and IU more since I made my OP and am excited that it's currently my top choice!
