relocating to indiana from kansas
we are currently looking to move to indiana in the next few months from kansas to be closer to family and friends. we just dont know where to go. we are a same sex couple so the area needs to be gay friendly. we are very much homebodies so going out to the clubs and bars are not a concern of ours. we do however have 4 children, one of which is disabled, so we need a decent school system that can accomadate her special needs. i have noticed that a lot of places that i have looked at want around 8-900 a month for rent. we need a 3-4 bedroom house, basement if possible. any ideas where a cheap, but decent area to move to would be? we like small towns but want to be close to walmart and target stores for shopping. we also dont want to live in the city, perfer north if possible since family is all up north.
thanks

Hmmmmm...if you want to be in the "really" gay friendly area, your gonna have to be close to downtown. I think Irvington & Fountain Square are well liked by the gay community??? Some of the Historic ares also. Your pretty much looking at the East sides (SE / E / NE) of the city. Decent? You will have to check them out and visit for yourself, everyone has very different views on what is considered safe. Here, you will get varrying opinions from various social status' on any of these so called "gay friendly" areas, you will have to be the judge for yourselves.
I think Broadripple is also known for it's share of gay's as well...pretty diversified area, but cheap is not in the Broadripple vocbulary. You would be lucky to find 2 or 3 bdr there for $800 or $900, let alone 4 bdr.
That's about my extent of knowledge on this topic, and thats just from observation, and may not be the best suggestions for all I know, but i would start looking into those areas, and you will likely be heading the right direction. It may even steer you in a better direction, but it's a starting point.

Are you talking about Northern Indiana? I was going to suggest Bloomington, but that may be too much of a haul for your family.

I ditto needing more info. It is three hours north of Indy to hit Michigan and 1.5 south to hit KY. Just where do you want to live? There are a lot of towns of all sizes.

I think same-sex couples in general have a difficult time finding acceptance in the small towns and even the larger cities of Indiana. Being both traditionally conservative and part of the bible-belt acceptance of alternative lifestyles of any kind just doesn't seem to be something Indiana is known for. All that said, I'd say that Fort Wayne Indiana may be your best bet in the NE since it is medium-sized (2nd largest city in Indiana), has a lot to offer overall, is doing well economically, and appears to be in the right vicinity of your family.

Fort Wayne would be good for you. I would stay out of small towns, in small towns here people frown upon that, well the older generations do, the younger generations don't care about that sort of thing. Fort Wayne is a beautiful location. Markle is a small town a few miles outside of Ft. Wayne, it is a nice little place, it'll probably be cheaper to live there then directly in FW. Good luck!
