Well my grandpa was born and raised in Medora, Indiana and he had a sort of backwoods/southern talk about him which I though was odd but it wasnt very strong and he was from Southern Indiana and all his Ancestors were from way down South so I figured that was what it was.

Haha-Yinz-my grandma says that all the time! I like it okay I suppose....I don't like Indianapolis that much. I would move to Northwest Indiana to be near Chicago. I would move back to Cleveland. But I'm not staying in Indianapolis.

Oh-here's another one for you. Tree lawn. I say that to people...and they have NO IDEA what the hell it is. I'm like "it's where you set your trash cans on garbage day...it's the area of grass between the street and the sidewalk".

I don't know if this is an Indiana thing or just peculiar to the small town I lived in, but I've heard people refer to a vacuum cleaner as a "sweeper".

I was born in Indy and moved back just last year. I'll be here until I go off to college. I'll just talk from my own experiences.

There is a lot of white trash in some areas. Not all, but some.
There are a lot of racists here. I experienced it firsthand a few weeks ago.
People drive so bad in Indy, I'm surprised they don't get arrested. Almost nobody uses their turn signals, including the police.
You can turn and still be on the same street (they have many streets that stay the same when you turn and others that change when you go straight).
There are a lot of Haitian cab services.
The people here talk like they're from Alabama. I swear I thought I was at a family reunion when I moved back to Indy (most of my family is from Birmingham).
There are a lot of homosexual people here and they're not in the closet either (nothing against homosexuals). I've seen some as young as middle school age.
People don't accept job applications in person with the exception of fast food restaurants.
They say education is good, but Indianapolis has so many colleges, it's unbelievable. They probably have more than Los Angeles and New York. Don't see how they need them when Indianapolis Public Schools reported that less than 50% percent of high schoolers even graduate. Must be out-of-state people for the most part.
The mayor wants the word black taken out of everything. Here there is a Black Expo every July. It's about a week long and it's all about black culture. He wants to change it to the Indianapolis expo, yet, he doesn't say anything about the Italian festivals or any other cultural events.

I think that's it.

Whoa there stallion.....First of all, these are things people have said to ME when I have told THEM that i am FROM Indiana. I never said I agree with all of these stereotypes, but I do find it humerous that most people believe we live in such a backwards state. I've even had two people tell me that they were so horrified by Indiana's ugly scenery and scary towns that they refused to stop while traveling through the state. Which makes no sense because Ohio and Illinois is just as boring, and have just as many freakish dives (but, doesnt every state?).

I know never heard it being a vacuum cleaner till I was in school. Even then all the teachers still called it a sweeper. I laughed over my stereotypes in California when my Ex-Wife's family got up set when I said sweeper or pop they kept correcting me and I LMAO so hard I almost peed my pants because thier family believed the only place you should live is California and the only way you should talk is California style as my Ex called it. They told me that "all Indiana people need to go to California to get speech lessons to talk normal" they said. She also said what was wrong is "how your family raised you to say these horrible things was just not right". I thought wow they really had nothing better to do but insult the way I talk.
