Down here, in SW IN we consider U.S. 40 to be the Mason-Dixon Line. Indiana is like two states: North IN and South IN.

Historically, immigration supports that--northern IN was settled largely by folks from the NY, PA, MA, OH, etc. area. Southern IN was populated by folks from NC, SC, TN, KY, VA, WV, etc.

Topographically, the above also holds true. Southern IN was largely missed by the glaciers that flattened the northern part of the state.

So, Y'all stop on in t'see us.

I moved to the South Bend area from Detroit this past summer. Ive been here long enough to notice some things.

-I havent met anyone with an accent or noticed

-People seem friendly

-The area seems to be in a little bit of a time warp. Never looked at so many houses with orange countertops!

-houses are either really small or huge.

-Getting anything done like a library card or car plates is a huge hassle. They seem paranoid. Bring 3 pieces of ID or your not getting anything done.

-Cant walk out of the Mishawaka Wal-mart without having my bags searched and needing to show proof I bought the stuff.

-The radio stations suck. Never heard so many 80's songs since....well the 80's

-The news anchors on tv seem uncomfortable and inexperienced. There is one new guy that has such a stone face I cant help but crack up every time he does the news. His partner has the worst highlight job in her hair I have ever seen.

-Cant find a decent pizza joint to save my life. It used to be our friday night ritual. No more.

-Big Meth problem

-Snows like B here and they dont plow or salt the roads

-awesome parks in Mishawaka

-driving around UP mall at Xmas was a nightmare.

I will report later as I live here longer

Bruno's has decent pizza. If you want a unique pizza experience, travel down to Bremen and try a Wooden Peel pizza.

Bruno's was ok. It didnt seem quite done enough. The bottom of the pizza was doughy. Maybe we got a bad one. I heard barnby's if IM spelling it right, is supposed to be good. I think what we cant get past is how expensive it is here. Back home we could get two large pizzas, bread and soda for 20 bucks. Here, we are lucky to get anything under 30. So we are disappointed shelling out 30 dollars for not so good pizza. For 10 bucks more we could eat at Outback or something.

But I always welcome suggestions as I have faith we just havent found that wonderful pizza place yet. I think on Sunday if the weather isnt bad, we might check out Wooden Peel Pizza. Sounds different. Thanks

I completely agree with you US 40 is our Mason Dixon Line. I live just a few blocks north of US 40. If you go south of US 40 to the next town if definetly has that South Indiana feel.
