I want to rent a cabin on the lake in April near Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore area. I am looking to get away and spend time with the dogs. I am looking for isolation, quiet, long walks/hikes with the dogs. I wonder what I can expect (generally) in terms of weather and temperature? I know it won't be warm and that is fine. I loved Cape Cod in the winter, and am hoping this will sort of approximate that experience?
I am not looking for a fancy or large cabin, just comfortable, safe, and near/on the lake. I am looking at one cabin that looks like it is steps away from a private beach, but clearly need to get more information.
Assuming a responsible owner with well-trained dogs, is it a dog-friendly area?
Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice?
Thank you!

I can not speak to weather, specific, lodging, or pet friendliness. I can say that the park was much better than my expectations. The beaches and dunes are very nice and there is a lot of reclaimed forests off the beaches with nature trails and bike paths. Indiana State Parks do have an entrance fee of $12 for non residents

Thanks censusdata- the park really sounds wonderful and thanks for the link- good information!

I know it is impossible to try to predict the weather, especially since April can go either way stormy, windy, and raw or warmer and spring-like.

I've been doing some research and I'm unable to find any cabin rentals near Indiana Dunes, all I've found is camping sites. I know there is no lodging in the state park portion.

I searched VRBO focusing on the towns around the Indiana Dunes. I found one place that will take dogs, very basic and not fancy, but the website said it is right on the lake and has a private beach; it looks comfortable and will be fine. I do still need to follow up and ask more questions.

I remember going there to slide down the dunes with other teens, many many years ago. Fun memories!
