Default Teaching in Good Ole' Indiana...

OK, so I'm an elementary education student also pursuing a license in mild interventions (special educ.) ... and here are the districts I'm considering applying to...

Gary Community School Corp.
Merrillville Schools
Hammond Schools
South Bend Community School Corp.

Does Merrillville need teachers at the elementary level/special ed? Are they hiring?

OK, I know people say Gary is bad... that's where I'm from, so I would want to "give back" to the community? How are the schools now (elem.)?

Are Hammond schools even hiring for elementary teachers (I will have a special education endorsement too).

South Bend? ... I don't know what to think... ?

What are the salaries like for brand new teachers....
From what I hear, Gary pays good... how good though, I wonder? (Although, that wouldn't be a job I'd be taking for the money, but more for the love.)
What are the beginning salaries like in those parts of northwest Indiana and South Bend (northern Indiana).

Any opinions/facts would help greatly! Thanks a ton!

Teacherlady--They would have to pay me a fortune to teach in Gary! Your desire to do so is admirable. I graduated from Lew Wallace in 74. i drove thru Gary last year and just wanted to cry! It looks like a war zone. please think long and hard about where you want to teach. If you do choose Gary I will keep you in my prayers!!

My husband is considering a career change and we might be leaving Michigan. I wanted to know if other states were hiring teachers (I am a special education teacher) and how much they paid. I found a website that lists all of the school districts by county, by state and you can look on their websites to see if they are hiring. It costs $20 for a lifetime membership but I found that it saved me tons of time and was well worth it. Plus, they have a money back guarantee if you do not find a job. The website is Teaching Jobs. K-12 Teaching Jobs, Administrative Jobs, and Coaching Jobs at Education Jobs. Browse 1000's of public and private school jobs
Good luck to you!
