Default Moving to Columbus Indiana (Columbus versus Greenwood)

Hi all. I've been browsing this forum for a while and I've found it to be very informative.

I'm moving to IN in two weeks. My work will be based in Columbus, IN. I've considered getting an apartment there however I'm also looking at living closer to Indy.

I love the big city life hence the consideration to move closer to Indianapolis to a place like Greenwood. However, from online maps, the commute from Greenwood to Columbus is approx. 40 minutes. I wouldn't want to spend 80 minutes a day driving up and down when I could spend that time at work.

If anyone here as personal experience, is the commute from greenwood to columbus really that long?

Also, I'm very big on fitness and golf. Does Columbus offer much in the way of gyms, fitness clubs and golf courses? Any other recreational activies that columbus offers? Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My husband commuted to Columbus from Fishers for a year and it stunk. When it came time to relocate after our house sold, we thought about Greenwood, but the 10 minute commute living in town was the big thing. I still go to Indy quite a bit (Costco, Trader Joes, Children's Museum, zoo ... friends up there), but I find that everything I need on a day to day is right here. I love the trail system. I bike most everywhere, even downtown, when the weather cooperates. Brown County State Park is minutes away. Cincinnati and Louisville are also that much closer. Madison and Clifty Falls State Park aren't far away either. And of course, Bloomington ...

Columbus isn't suburban, which I really like having come from suburbs in the past. And with Honda and Cummins adding jobs, I think this place is only going to get better.

There are gyms here, Cardinal Fitness, Columbus Fit, there's also a very active and popular swim club (Donner Swim Club).

I guess the bottom line for us is that I'm glad we didn't move to Greenwood. Nothing against Greenwood because we looked at homes there, but the commute was the deal breaker.

Guitarlix,

Columbus has (3) good-sized Gyms to offer Total Fitness, Columbus Fit, and Cardinal Fitness. We have several great Golf Courses...about 6 in and around Columbus. Outside Recreational facilities would be Ceraland Park, Mill Race Park, Donner Park, and Brown County State Park. Plus for an added bonus...the big city life is only 40-70 minutes away depending if it is Greenwood or Louisville.

Hope this information was helpful in making a decision,
Julie Lashley

I've lived in Greenwood Indiana for three years and Columbus for 20 years. If you are younger, Columbus doesn't have a lot to offer. There is a couple of local movie theatres and bowling alleys, but if you like to go out on the weekends, you will want to hit up Indianapolis (specifically Broad Ripple) The drive isn't too bad from Greenwood to Columbus, because traffic isn't heavy. Speed limits are 70pmh on I65. I recommend having a car that gets good gas mileage if you choose to do this.
