Evansville? Give me the five best points and the worst five.
There is a possibility I will be moving from Chattanooga. The towns look
similar in size with riversides, only no mountains or hills in Evansville.

Is the environment progressive or conservative? How is the cost of living?
What is the main economy? Does the town have a young feel? Hows the
weather?

I drive through Evansville to get to Illinois, from Chattanooga.
I don`t know that much about the town itself, but I do remember there are alot of stop lights through the main drag. I mean, it seems like every block has a stop light, all the way through..

Biggest damn cockroaches I have ever seen were in Evansville. HUGE!
There are 2 Universities there so there is a somewhat young feeling in certain parts of town. There a Casino Aztar on the Ohio River. The town is pretty evenly split between blacks and whites--yankees and rebs. Southern Indiana is in an area of rolling hills that are really quite pretty. The countryside outside of town , the small farming towns, have a heavy German/Swiss influence. The people there eat pork brains sandwiches! High school sports are big. they get some pretty big name concerts at Roberts Stadium. [ i think that is what it is called. Really a typical midwestern city.

Evansville, Indiana (IN) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

My guess is that Yankeegirl313 uses Hwy 41 through Evansville,The main north/south artery through town, which does have lots of stop lights. Thus the name "stop light city".

Evansville does have a beautiful riverfront with lots of activity in the warmer months. There is a welcome/visitor center and a museum on the riverfront and lots of huge, old, very well kept victorian style homes in the area. Evansville is not all flat. The city's far west side is hilly or gently rolling terrain.

Progressive or conservative? Thats a tough question. There are several new buildings that have been built on the riverfront recently. American General is building a new national headquarters building near the river and downtown, constuction has started. There is currently a debate to renovate the current Roberts stadium or build a new stadium downtown. There is also a state of the art new rain forest building nearing completion at the Mesker Zoo.

Cost of living is typical midwest.

Evansville is big into High School sports, especially football. Of course, all of Indiana loves basketball.

Some of the Major employers in the area are Toyota, Whirlpool, Alcoa, Bristol Meyers/Squibb and several plastics companies. Also, typical Indiana, lots of farms, corn/soy beans just outside of town.

Evansville is a college town. U.S.I. is an ultra modern, very fast growing university with about 10,000 students and a beautiful campus. Also University of Evansville with an ever expanding beautiful campus.

The weather is not the best, with some extremes in winter and summer.

Evansville and Indianapolis are like my second and third homes since ALL of my family lives in these two cities and I'm in one or the other once or twice every month. Like most of Indiana, Evansville is pretty conservative. Evansville is about 150,000 people with more stoplights than any other city of it's size I've ever seen. Lloyd Expressway (IN- 66) is the primary east- west road running from Newburgh and on into Posey County. Green River Road, Burkhardt Road, and US- 41 are the primary north- south roads. Most new development is on the east side of town (generally considered east of Weinbach Avenue). The city's only shopping mall is located on the east side on Green River Road (Eastland Mall) and the downtown is pretty much dead, though the city is making an effort to revitalize it. The riverfront around the casino is very nice, but go five or six blocks north of there and you're surrounded by abandoned factories. About 30- 40 years ago, Evansville was a booming city, but recently, numerous businesses and industrial companies began to either shut down or move out of the city. The entire city is laid out in a grid system, so getting lost is not a problem. Vanderburgh County schools are decent and high school athletics are a big part of the city, typical of most midwest cities. It's not an expensive city to live in- you could get a nice four bedroom house for $250,000 or so. The weather is pretty typical of the lower midwest, similar to St. Louis. The major downside is that Evansville is pretty isolated from the rest of the state- Indianapolis is 3 hours away, but if someday I 69 is extended, that drive could be reduced to 2 hours. Personally, I would stay in Chattanooga just because it feels like a larger city.

Evansville is not a college town in the sense Bloomington and West Lafayette are college towns, but the area right by UE and on campus at USI are nice. UE is not expanding, that is not even possible considering its location. Evansville is a very conservative town. There are very few real democrats there, just less conservative republicans.

Having said that and hoping to add to the conversation, I guess I will post some top 5 lists:

top 5 best things about E-ville:

1) low cost of living
2) very, very friendly people
3) the riverfront is nice
4) the casino and neighboring bars are fun
5) main street has loads of potential

the worst things:

1) very, very conservative town (that may be good for some, just not for me)
2) the west side of Evansville (except for USI of course)
3) Evansville Otters/E-ville sports fans (except for Reitz and Mater Dei football, even though they are the whiniest fan bases)
4) downtown is dead
5) very few local restaurants (they do exist, just not in large numbers)

Overall, in my opinion, Evansville is an allright place. If you have any more specific questions, I would be happy to help. I lived there long enough to get a college degree, and visit frequently as I still have many friends and family in the area. When I was there, I thought it was the most backwards, stagnent place on the planet. Having stepped away for a time, I can see the appeal of the town. Having said that, I doubt I would move back any time soon.

Quick clarification, when I say UE is not expanding, I mean it is not expanding geographically. They can add all the buildings they want on campus, but until they start bulldozing houses south of Lincoln Ave to make room for UE, they are not expanding geographically. That is what I meant by UE is not expanding.
