Possible move to muncie with kids
My husband may take a job in Muncie at Ball State. I have a 5 and 7 year old. Any suggestions as to where to house hunt so as to be in a good school district for elementary school. I have heard some mention of Yorktown. What is this town like and how is it different from Muncie? Thanks for any info!

I am from muncie and my family is from Yorktown and i wouldn't suggest just anywhere in muncie, but maybe the north side of muncie or even like you said Yorktown maybe nice for you guys. The kids are mean in muncie. i mean its not a bad place to live. There is nothing to do there but stay away from the Southside. I was raised there on the south side, Like the Elementary schools aren't bad at all, i would suggest Grissom Ele. School. but my cousin goes to Wilson Middle School and she is in 7th grade and there are girls in her grade that are pregnant!!! I can't believe it. It wasn;t that way when i went there. but anyways its a nice place but the southside of muncie is just kinda ew. haha I dont know if that helped you can directly message me if you want and i can tell you more. Hope everything works out for you guys!-
Sorry i forgot to add this,
Yorktown is a nice town. A lot of those people have a lot of money. My sister goes to the high school there. The people are way different than in muncie. They are nicer in a way. But like i said if you have anymore questions just ask!

Do you know what they like about it? Does Yorktown have a business district or if you lived there would you be going into Muncie for shopping/dining. I am assuming housing is more expensive in Yorktown? Also I wondered in terms of parks and rec what the area has to offer? Are there places to go hiking and swimming...are there nice playgrounds....that sort of thing? Thanks so much. I appreciate the info.

They moved there for the schools. Other than the Burris Lab School, apparently, the Muncie public school system is rather lacking.

You would have to go to muncie for shopping. There is no mall in yorktown. but there is little diners you can go to but if want like Applebees, Steak-n-shake, etc. you would have to go to muncie. But they aren't that far from Yorktown. Like maybe at the most a 10 min. drive. Yorktown is a good place and everyone knows everyone. There isn't any hiking in Muncie. Maybe at the Museum. I think you guys will like it in Yorktown. Have you ever been to Muncie before?

Yorktown is about 10-15 minutes from the local Super Walmart, Meijer, and even 15-20 to the Muncie Mall. It's really not a bad drive to get to all of the "major attractions"! Really, Muncie doesn't have much in the way of entertainment but it's a nice town. I went to school at Yorktown. My children currently go to Storer Elementary in Muncie - it's excellent. I would NOT, under any circumstances, send my children to high school here. It's not like people are getting killed or anything, there are just some drugs, school fights, etc. I didn't experience much of that AT ALL going to school in Yorktown. Yorktown is known to be "the preppy school" for "the rich kids" but it's really not ALL like that. There are a lot of higher income families but there are low income also. There are income-based apartments, duplexes you can rent, etc. There are also the "near mansions"! Really, anything in your price range will be available. Also, my father has been employed at Ball State for 25 years now and loves it. We can't get him to retire!

I would definitely check out the neighborhood directly west of campus, as well as the one across Tilottson Ave., west of campus.
Pros over Yorktown neighborhoods- houses with more character and were constructed better, a population that will have a higher concentration of other university professors and workers, in an area that is much more walk able to campus, cultural venues and businesses (university village) associated with the university.

We are moving to Muncie in November. I grew up in the Lapel area (about 30 min away) I actually attended Ball State for a semester, and transfered to a private callege. I would also try to stay on the North Side. There are areas of Muncie that are zoned for the Yorktown school system. That is where we are planning on living. I remember in High School I liked the Yorktown School, because they were a lot like my school. So that is what I want for my children that are in 4th and 1st grade. The current school system we are in ( in another state) is crazy. My children are actually the minority here. So it will be different for them to be the majority in Indiana...HAHAHA.

Consider Gaston
Although most of us in this area are more "working class," I've found the Gaston area to be a great area to live. We are about 10 minutes away from Muncie. My children went to parochial schools up until the middle school years and I love the small school atmosphere. The staff at Wes-Del are on point when it comes to your child's academic needs. My daughter was called into the counselor's office to ask if she was "bored," and when she admitted she was, the counselor placed her in the advanced programs where she is challenged to do her best. My son is in the honors programs at the high school and it has met every caliber of the parochial schools he previously attended. The actual town of Gaston is lacking in shopping atmosphere, but it has a nice small town attitude with people being accepted and cared about almost immediately upon arriving. The outlying areas of Gaston are dotted with small neighborhoods and farms. I guess it all depends upon what's important to you. We used to live in Yorktown, but found it to be expensive and a higher tax district, but other than those "cons" it was a nice place to live.
