I was rasied to think of others first, and even if I think I am doing nothing wrong, if it really offends someone I just wouldnt do it. Even if I thought it was perfectly OK, I wouldn't fly that flag because I kow it bothers people. To show an absurd example: Even though I know there is nothing wrong with wearing purple nail polish if I want, I wouldn't if I knew it legitimately offended you. Maybe you got beat as a kid by someone wearing it. Who knows?
Just put yourself in someone else's shoes.

THE FLAG REPRESENTS THE "SOUTH" -The flag stands for our southern hertige. It also means ya despise northerns and transplants. African Americans make the south and I know lots of blacks that wave the confederate flag. We tend to forget a good portion of blacks fought for the south during the Civil War because they had respect for their owners. Yall can go to youtube and type in confederate blacks or something and youll see some videos. The unwritten rule out there is : If your ancestors didn't fight for the south, ya have no right to the flag. The reason some think its racist is because the KKK flys it, but ya know they also fly the U.S. flag. So does that make the U.S. flag racist?
Ya know what I hate, when people call the south, the southeast or when they say w. virginia, kentucky, maryland, florida or virginia is a southern state. When in truth there a mix of northerners and southerners.

The flag represents history
The Confederate Flag represents a piece of history that this country went through. The flag was a banner representing a life style in the "old south" compared to the Union Flag as a banner of life in the north. The flag itself was not racist nor a flag of hatred it was their elected flag. We have no problem with seeing the different American flags of the past with its different star configurations in museums and in parades. When the southern states suceeded they needed a flag to represent them. The Confederate flag bears no emotion, it is a flag! The Civil War was a war for the economy and survival of the southern states, which was agricultural compared to the north which was industrial. The north wanted freedom of slavery, but the mistake was wanting to impose it to quickly on the south which depended on the slaves for working the farms. Slavery was not right but to take it away quickly from the farms meant devistation and loss of crops. Why do we make this part of history to always mean a racial issue, it wasn't completely. A. Lincoln would have done anything to have preserved the union, even if it meant a war over that issue. There are too many other things in this world to pick on as our economy today then to keep picking at bones of the past, leave it alone.

While I agree with those who feel a racist pull in their stomach when they see the confederate flag waving, I have to say you don't really understand the Southerner's reasons for waving it. I didn't either, until I moved to Texas, where just about every other truck has this symbol on the rear window, or waving from the antena. They wear it on their shirts and from the flag pole in their yards (I think every time I've seen this I've also seen the American flag, as well as the Texas flag--people down here are insanely proud of their southern and Texas heritage). I've asked several people about this, and to them it's a symbol of who they came from, the hard work they placed in the land their descendants claimed and worked (remember, the vast majority of southerners didn't own slaves, it was the minority wealth that could afford the big plantations, slaves, etc.) and the fact that the North can never squash their fiercely independant nature.
Now, I so totally don't agree with the last one, but I'm an American whose family didn't pass this antipathy down to me. If I were in their shoes, maybe I'd feel the same way. To the original poster, I don't see anything different between a southerner who waves this flag and a balck person who reminds me they are black to make a point. So the fact that Obama (along with his wife) is running for president and has made remarks to his African American heritage is no different. You are more than welcome to disagree.

I agree with you. I have the confederate flag on a plate in front my car. I have a flag in my window and a big fuzzy blanket of it. my family is from TN, GA. I myself, dont care what yall here in Indiana think. I am supporting my heritage. But I dont think its ignorant or stupid. If you want to fly it, then fly it! I am and I am just a little white girl who lives in Indianapolis, IN! haha
