there are few stoplights on US 40 between Terre Haute and Indianapolis (excluding INDY i can only recall 9 stop lights( and 0 stop signs) for the entire distance)). lack of places to pass? US 40 is a 4-lane highway

Good grief... I've not counted 'em, but sorry, to me 9 stoplights, when trying to get from point A to point B in a normal business [ie: non-scenic mode] manner is not trivial. As to the lack at times of places to pass, yes it may be 4-lane, but there are times when you are hard pressed to get around some of the slower movers, etc. No desire to be difficult, but seems we are looking at the same glass, but different perspective... take care.
