Thanks to PJ Matthews for the zip codes!
My wife, child and I are very likely moving to Evansville in march.
I was looking at Realtor.com, and saw several house for around 50,000. Are these houses in decent neighborhoods? for example: one address is: 1433 S BARKER AVE
EVANSVILLE, IN 47712. the house is listed at 53,000. Is this considered a good part of the city?
If it is, then it will be quite a bit cheaper than where we live now.
The link to the house:

Thanks to everyone for your help! We are so stressed out right now about getting ready to move, finding a good school, after school care our daughter ( she is 5), (finding a house to buy or rent), selling our house here, ETC....

Hi J and C, 1433 S. Barker would be in the Howell neighborhood on Evansville's SW side of town. Not sure what you may be looking for. There are some nice area's in Howell. This particular address is located really close to a large train yard.

Washingtongirl, I completely agree w/ this. Newburgh is a really nice city and it is right by the Ohio river. The old downtown area is also beautiful. I'd definitely look into this town.

I'm familiar with barker. It right next to reitz highschool. IT can be run down in some areas and a lot of lower income white people but I think its pretty safe. Some parts arent too bad. I would just check it out. It depends on what you comming from but I would say you could almost call it a run down area but its not quite that bad.
And in general the west side is a good area of the city. And Reitz HS is a good public highschool. At least compared to the rest in Evansville.

You're not going to find any $500k dollar homes there, but you're not going find gang members hanging out on the street corners either. The west side of Evansville has always had the reputation of being the hard working, blue collar section of E'ville, and there's nothing wrong with that.
As mentioned above, you will be VERY CLOSE to the Howell Rail Yard. I mean so close you'll be able to watch the CSX crew from your front porch. Do a google map search and you will see. If you are a train enthusiast, this house is for you. LOL
If you have a two income family there is no reason you can't afford to find a very nice house in a great neighborhood for a little more money. One of the great things about Evansville is what you can get for a house for a reasonably small mortgage payment.

To WASHINGTONGIRL: My mother's people are from Evansville, so I have spent some time there over the last forty years. I really think that Vanderburgh county is terribly underrated as a place to live. Most of the town seems very nice and relatively clean, and I'm looking through the eyes of a jaded old law enforcement officer! It really is a very nice place, and I believe you'll be quite happy there.

Hi! I grew up in that neck of the woods. Have you thought about living a little north of Evansville?
I'm not sure if you up for small town living, but there are a few towns that are about a 20 minute drive or so north of Evansville.(15-20 minutes even if you get stuck at all the stop lights on Hwy 41) You could check out McCutchinville(I'm not sure I spelled that right) which has some very nice houses...kind of upper end price range. 2 small towns called Haubstadt and Ft.Branch have some older houses that would be in the below $100,000 price range.
Oh, and check out the national registered sex offender list before choosing a home. My dh and I checked it out and were pretty shocked to see how many sex offenders were in Evansville.

Well, I guess we really don't want to end up right next to a railroad hehe.
The reason I was checking out that particular house, is that it is 34,000 cheaper than the house we live in now (moline,IL). It would be a dream come true to sell our house and be able to buy a house for half of what we owe now
Realistically, if we could find a good neighborhood with a house anywhere from 30- 70k, we would be happy..and of course a good school too.
We are hoping to learn this week, if my wife's job will be transferring to Evenasville or not.
We don't mind a small drive at all. We are used to living right in the middle of a small city, but we could get used to the smaller town living too...as long as it has high speed internet haha..I am spoiled.

A friend of mine who works in law enforcement in the Evansville area, tells me that this county (Vanderburgh) is about 20% below the national average, in terms of registered sex offender residents. Now, THAT'S shocking.

I have worked in the evansville area for years, and I am not sure you can find a nice safe neighborhood for the money you are talking about. I am pretty sure you can't. I agree with Beckerd on the towns he mentioned. There is also Poseyville, and Wadesville. They are small towns, but nice and friendly. Not very far drive into the city. Farm orientated. You might want to check out New Harmony also. The Evansville Courier and Press is the newspaper. Hope this is a little help.
