I am a native of Evansville. I always felt relatively safe in most parts of town, except for around Haynie's Corner, some of the downtown areas, and the Fulton Street area.
I sure wouldn't consider the 47712 zip code as the north side of town though. That zip goes all the way out west of the city limits, past USI and the east side of St. Phillip Road in Posey County.
The Marrs township area is a decent area for the most part (the eastern side of Posey county). Also Poseyville and Wadesville are decent too. The communites of Haubstadt and Darmstadt are worth looking at too if you don't mind a short drive to Evansville. (Which actually all these locations would be a short drive to Evansville).
Life generally goes at a slower pace in the Evansville Tri State area. Very friendly people.
Just be prepared for the humidity in July and August. It can be overwhelming if you aren't used to it. Central air conditioning is an absolute must.
Good luck and best wishes.

What is the area in western Evansville like? In particular out by USI. Are there any nice residential areas near USI (say, within a 15 minute drive)? I've briefly seen parts of the easter side of town, and a little of the downtown, but not much around the western side.

Evansville's west side has greatly expanded in the last few years or so, with lots of new developments, such as several strip malls and a super wal-mart, Kohl's, Home Depot, Lowe's and many, many restaurants. All within a few minutes of USI.
I think the USI area is beautiful. Gently rolling terrain and still some forest left. Generaly speaking, residence in the area is kind of spread out with lots of nice area's where the nearest neighbor might be a 1/4 mile or more away.
West of USI is mostly farm land.

Having spent a punishing two years in Evansville, I have to guess Washingtongirl will love it there. If she wants a place with closed-minded conservatives, she's found it.
I had to move to Evansville for two years for a job, and it was two of the longest years of my life. If you aren't into going to church and supporting the local high school football team, you will be bored out of your mind.

Evansville's West Side
I've lived in Evansville for over 12 years and loved every minute of it. It is so totally not boring and this comes from someone that lived in Virginia Beach for 7 years, hated every second of that tourist trap.
We have plenty to entertain us and we have a wide variety of interest. There is always some festival going on during the warmer months within a 30 mile radius, concerts, plays, CAR shows out the, well you get the picture
I live a couple miles from USI out in the country and my nearest neighbor is at least 1/4 mile away with only 5 families living along our stretch of road. Real Estate is not unreasonable and it's definitely a buyers market. Heck my girlfriend loves this area so much she wants to move here and she lives in a nice suburb outside of Chicago.
Even though I'm in the country I'm only 6 minutes away from SuperWalmart, nice theater, Starbucks, 2 groceries, 4 gas stations, Kohl's, Lowe's, every bank branch and countless eateries. If they'd put a bookstore on the West side I'd have everything I ever need covered!!!!
I LOVE EVANSVILLE and after living in a small town (3,000) growing up about an hour North of here, wouldn't live anywhere else. The job market is good and the city is constantly growing.
Evansville is a very friendly town with a beautiful walkway along the river front where ya can pop into the Riverboat casino or across the street at various establishments to eat, drink and be merry.
The towns that surround Evansville for the most part are quaint with different points of interest and are always nice to check out.
BTW I quit going to church locally a few years ago AND never supported the local football team

Vincennes perhaps??
I know I'm late to this discussion but aren't they putting a nice subdivision up towards where I-64 and 41 meet? Would make commuting relatively easy even in town..... How bout Princeton area?

First, thanks a lot for all of the information! It's really helpful.
I have been looking at houses online and have some questions. Does anyone know about the subdivision directly north of USI? What about the newer one, Willow Creek, just southwest of USI? What about homes near Felstead and Broadway? Mostly, I'm looking for safety near USI and would prefer a subdivision where I can walk my dogs. I would appreciate ANY advice.

Mulberry Square Apartments
Hi. We are also looking at relocating to Evansville and last week looked at Mulberry Square. They are older, two-story brick in the historic area adjacent to downtown. The apartment is about what you would expect for a older apartment. Seemed clean. Plenty of parking. No pool or anything like that, but a short walk to the river and downtown restaurants.
We decided against it because we need a place that can accommodate our four cats until we find a house. They took cats, but no apartment wants four.
I don't know what you want, but we looked at a really cute, but very small studio on First Street with tons of charm. There are lots of places to rent in that area in old Victorian homes. You just have to drive around and write down numbers. Rents vary depending on the condition of the home.

Arriving Evansville in July
Hi,
After months of research, I've decided to pursue a move from Arizona to Southern Indiana. I've been searching within a 40 mile radius of Evansville for a small home with some acreage (5 wooded would be great) or within a 40 mile radius of Louisville (although I think I'd prefer Evansville area). My price range is a maximum of $165,000 and I'd like to be in a rural area, where I don't have to worry about development cropping up in 5 years. Also, I would prefer to have a stick built or brick home.
I've seen some neat looking places in Winslow, Lynnville, Selvin, DePaw, Newburgh, Elizabeth, Cordyon, Boonville, Richland, Evanston. Kind of all over the place, as you can tell. I'll be arriving in Evansville on July 10 and returning to AZ on July 19th, so I'm really hoping to do an extensive search while I'm there. If anyone can lead me to certain, safe, good areas, I would appreciate it.
I'd also be more than happy to buy someone lunch or dinner when I'm out there in order to gain some insight from a local resident. I'm originally from Illinios and I miss the beauty of the midwest. I'm excited about moving back.
All comments would be most appreciated. Time is ticking.
