anyone have any information about New Paris and the surrounding area?

New Paris (a small burg) is just south of Goshen and Lake Wawassee is close to there. Mishawaka, South Bend and Notre Dame are as well.
there is a Paris, Indiana (another small burg) down in Jennings County. Don't know which one came first, Paris or New Paris. I doubt that French people would be excited about either place. |

They had a big speedway in New Paris when I was growing up in the area.

my Grandfather had a farm on County Road 15...I visited it a couple of times when I was a child.....over 40 years ago....if my memory serves me correct it is very rural and has absolutely beautiful countryside....I would like to visit this area again this spring or summer....maybe even move to this area altogether.....would this be a good or bad idea?

you should go check it out for yourself. a lot of things change in the span of 40 years. I know that when I was a kid growing up in Chicago, my dad owned a horse farm operation just to the south of Dyer, Indiana and we would go there frequently to ride the thoroughbred horses. when I returned to check out the farm about 15 years later, it was all gone and developed into a bunch of homes. couldn't recognize the place and had to leave. the old horse farm was no more. Progress and development can dampen old memories. Last edited by Southside Shrek; 01-08-2007 at 03:34 PM. |

I know that the farm is still there and my cousin is farming it.......I would like to know a little bit about this area as it is now......what kind of towns are nearby Goshen, Foraker, and Nappanee?

I'm orginally from the Bremen/Nappanee area. Nappanee and Wakarusa are good areas. Good school system too. Foraker ... couldn't tell you a thing. I hear the Goshen is having a pretty bad crime problem. You can always look up the Elkhart Truth or the local Goshen newspaper online.
I'd imagine that nothing much has changed in New Paris in decades. |

you can't say that about Dyer because everything changed there. The city of Chicago sprawled out all over it. |

ladeebug--
I don't live in New Paris but pass through there on my way to work in Goshen every day. If you are a country girl, New Paris and south are more the spots, otherwise you get into the dregs of northern Elkhart County. Goshen used to be more of a Mennonite community, but things have changed in the last twenty years, and it has become more urban in attitude along with all the attendant problems. New Paris? Still good, but too close to Goshen for comfort. |
