Default Amtrak question. From Valparisio to ???

Hi Indy people!
I need help with a traveling question. I am going to be dropping my Mom off in Valparisio to visit her friend on my way to Tucson. I am trying to then plan her route via Amtrak to Tucson. She will not fly!

From what I can find out, she can head East and take Amtrak from South Bend to Chicago, or she can go straight to Chicago. She would have to have someone drive her to either South Bend or Chicago. This may not be an option.....

There seems to be a commuter train (NITCD) that she could pick up in Dune Park and take to Chicago.

The questions:
Does this seem feasible?
Am I planning it corectly?
How is the commuter train?
Which Chicago station should she exit to, so that she is the closest to the Amtrak station?

Any alternate ideas?

Thanks!

Take her to the South Bend Airport and have her take the South Shore Line (NICTD) to Randolph St (the end of the line). She can get a cab at Michigan and Randolph to Union Station and get on Amtrak there. You could take her to Dune Park too, if that's an easier for you, but if she gets on in South Bend, she'll be guaranteed a seat and an on time train.
