Default Looking for info on Grant County

I am about to move to Grant County. I am looking for some general insight as to the area. I have been up there a few times, but only for a week at a time with friends.

Jobs and schools are not a factor. Wondering about crime, local must do events, awesome places to go eat, or anything else I need to know. I am so looking forward to a slower pace and some elbow room.

Anywhere you have humans living there will be crime. Grant county usually has average crimes but recently had a street shooting spree as I have read. Said to be over drugs but all the shooters have been arrested I believe. They hold a function on the town square in Marion every first Friday with fair type food vendors and a different theme of area things each month. Craft booths, church booths, animal shelter etc. has those types of things as well.

Pretty much fast food places or sit downs like Apple Bees, Buffalo Wild Wings, Bob Evans, Ryan's, Sirloin Stockade no real "local flavor" food places left anymore really. James Dean festival is a big thing I think in Sept each year, brings in tons of people from all over the world and old car shows.

Indiana Wesleyan University is king in that county so if you don't have a problem with that then look towards the south end of Marion for housing around IWU. (more maintained area) County schools and communities are far better than the county seat of Marion right now.

Does that help any?

It helps a lot, thanks! I do have friends up there, but they live on a farm and tend to be homebodies. I asked them about local festivals & got a blank look for an answer.

We have many drug & gang related shootings here every single day. Even in places that are supposed to be "better" areas.

I am heading up there in a couple of days to look at houses. So very excited!

My parents are living in Marion and seem to like it just fine. They feel plenty safe and I do as well when I visit. However, there really isn't much for restaurants or shopping. Economically there is room for improvement, but they opened up a giant wal mart distribution center, as well as a dollar general dc. Which I think will bring in other opportunities. There are some nice green ways that extend all the way to gas city I believe. Matter park has some nice parkways and tennis courts. A big playground section for kids. Housing is def. affordable. A nice public library in the downtown section. From what my dad tells me, they're planning on building the downtown section back up. Hopefully move away from the strip mall eyesore that is wreaking havoc all over US.
Feel free to pm if you have any other questions.

I have lived in Grant County near all my life of 35 years. I live in Fairmount just 10-15 min. south of Marion. If you like the simpleness of small town living it would be a perfect spot to scope out. You rarely ever hear of crime and it is perfectly located so that you are roughly the same distance to larger cities such as Muncie, Kokomo, Anderson, Noblesville and Carmel. You could be at any of these locations between 30-45 min from Fairmount. You may hear of lots of lost hope in Grant County but it has had some significant changes in the last year and the county I believe is looking to build for job growth. New additions have been Dollar General and Wal-mart distribution centers and Meijers due in the spring of 2009. Best places we love to eat are Cracker Barrell-Gas City, Sirloin Stockaide-Marion, Ivenhoe's-Upland (Over 100 different types of ice cream sundays and shakes, wonderful chic.salad!!!) Also the Tin Lizzy in Montpeiler west of Marion is quite a unique place to dine. It has 50-60's decor and serves bergers, ice cream, and such. It has some really cool unusual antique cars on display one can be driven from the front or back (there is a moter in both ends of the car). Good Luck and Welcome.

Default Swayzee is the place to live

It all depends on where you are moving from, to determine where you will be the happiest. If you want quaint and quiet, swayzee is the place, and we have the best meat market in the area. In truth there isn't much to do in marion, accept fast food restaurants and groceries, but when you live in swayzee, it's a few minutes more and you can be in kokomo, where all the food and shopping choices are available to you. If you are a shopper, you will find a great experience shopping at elder-beerman, it is the best department store around. It is like going back in time, the people here have old fashion values and care about their property better than in many other areas of the county. You will see how nice the roadways are and how the farmers mow along the road, you will not see this in our neighboring states, they do everything but weedwack around the telephone poles. Good luck on your search.
