Default transferring to Fort Wanye GM plant from Taxas

We might transfer to GM Plant in Fort Wanye. We have three small children and are looking for a small town within 20 miles of plant. Needs good school system and a maybe a local mothers day out program at a local chruch. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

I tend to agree with the others - If moving a family for a job with GM right now I'd get a lawyer to draft up a document asking for a golden-parachute (a great severance package clause of some sort) to take effect if I am laid off in the next 5 years. Moving and then the primary bread-winner losing their job... been there, done that... not fun (would likely disrupt the entire family and lead to moving again).

Golden parachutes are usually reserved for big wigs. We little people are lucky to get severance and a pat on the back.

That is true, very true... however, maybe 'tis better to ask during these negotiations than not - don't hurt to try, esp. if they want him bad enough.

FWIW - the FtW plant is one if not the most efficient of the GM facilities. Even so, they will be shutting down for 3 instead of normal 2 weeks this summer.

Might not have the latest, but for a potential "insider's view" and a different/other side of the issue, might be good to check out the local union's site for info: UAW Local 2209 Your source for Fort Wayne Assembly and UAW News

Best of luck to yas, and hope whichever path ya'll take its good.

Small town within 20 miles of GM?
My ex-husband is from Markle, that's a nice small town, (but the elementary school is not in town)...or you could look at Ossian or Bluffton. (you might want to stay in Wells county for schools..)
The SW Fort Wayne area is also nice- toward Roanoke.
Auburn and Columbia City are also nice "small towns" but you might be getting past the 20 mile mark there.
New Haven is located on the east side of Fort Wayne, and is very quick to the GM plant on HWY 469. If you are willing, you could even look into some small towns in Ohio.

if your hourly I don't think the move is a bad idea. Fort Wayne assembly builds trucks faster and has a higher quality than any other GM plant producing trucks. If your salary, well that maybe different. We have seen many Salary people from various plants come here. some get moved on some stay.
the town of Roanoke is only 6 min west of the plant. it is a small town with small town values. retail stores are 10 to 15 min from Roanoke in the town of Huntington or Ft. Wayne. Fort Wayne is on average 15 min away from the plant. 5 to 10 min north of the plant on the north west side of Fort Wayne is the community of Aboite a very nice area of sub divisions.
Google map the area GM's address is,
12200 Lafayette Center Rd
Roanoke, IN 46783
good luck on what ever decision you make.
